After flying high as Chicago's first Elphaba in the national tour of "Wicked " last year, Stephanie J. Block will return to assume the helm of "The Pirate Queen" in an exclusive pre-Broadway engagement this fall.
Block told a crowd gathered outside the stage door after her last performance of "Wicked" in Pittsburgh earlier this week that she was moving on to "The Pirate Queen."
Managers for Block confirmed Monday that a deal has been inked. Producers are expected to announce the full cast in the coming weeks.
The new musical from Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, the creators of "Les Miserables" and "Miss Saigon," tells the story of Grace O'Malley, a legendary Irish chieftain and pirate who ruled the 16th century seas and even took on England's Queen Elizabeth I.
Steppenwolf's Frank Galati will direct. The musical is being produced by Moya Doherty and John McColgan, the duo behind the wildly successful "Riverdance."
"The Pirate Queen" sets sail Oct. 3 through Nov. 26 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre.
