"Melons, and lemons and pears!" "Oh, my!" No offence to those who find it funny, but to me this is a really lame, unnecessary reference to The Wizard of Oz and I'm really, really surprised that Winnie Holzman would sink that low. The first time I heard it I was like "OOOookkk!" I don't let it ruin how much I enjoy the rest of the show, but i must admit for a moment there I'm always just disgusted. "Well, there's no place like home' is actually funny in an odd sort of way and not corny or lame. But the thing between Boq and Nessarose...ugh! Does anyone know where I'm coming from?

i was so totally thinking that....even before i scrolled down and saw your post.
i think the lines that kinda quote the Wizard of Oz are funny, but corny. some are good in context, and some it feels like they tried really hard to connect it with the Wizard of Oz

I thought the lemons and melons and pears joke was funny. It was even funnier when some Nessa, I forget who it was (Cristy Candler?), said "oh my" in a very flirtatious kind of way...
"There's no place like home" just doesn't seem like the right response to Nessa asking "what are you doing here?" I liked it better in its original context, when Elphaba uses it as a response to the Wizard telling her she loves Oz too much to actually hurt anyone.

I liked the lemons and melons and pears.
After a while it seems kinda corny, but at first it's funny cuz you're not really expecting it. It's just fun to have those random references to the Wizard of Oz in there. And I think what makes it funnier for people is when they say it naturally so it doesn't sound like a forced joke. When I first heard the line, it was funny cuz it was natural, not a forced reference.

If I answered this honestly I'd have to say most of the libretto and a good portion of the book. I've long had issues with the words. The score is brilliant and the acting, costumes, lighting and other technical aspects have always been superb... but the words? Sorry, no. I don't they're Schwartz's best by any means... but since the good outweighs the bad, I still love the show!

I didnt think the "lemons and melons and pears" line was corny...it was cute but not corny. I think a really corny and annoying line is "Why Miss Elphaba, look. You're beautiful" it is almost impossible to deliver that line and make it not sound corny and that really annoys me!

During Defying Gravity::
Glinda: Elphie, you're trembling. Here, put this around you. *puts cape on Elphie*
People always start laughing at the point, and I don't think it's funny at all. Yeah it kinda shows that Glinda dresses Elphaba, but I don't find it funny. Maybe I just don't get it.

Jun 18 2006, 03:19 AM
People laugh at the cape, but it's not because they find it funny, if that makes any sense. They laugh at the irony of it, not the humor.
I must say that Winnie Holzman overdid the Ozian words a little bit. They're cute at first and there are certainly some scenes that call for them, but after a while they get kind of annoying, especially when they pop up in the more dramatic scenes when they're really not all that appropriate to the mood.
Also, "a seed dropped by a skybird..." what the heck is a skybird?
MeganS
Jun 18 2006, 03:27 AM
a skybird....hmm.....a bird in the sky? lmao...I dunno. but I  that song.
hmmmm.....I have to think about a line that I don't like. ok. in WWOTE. when Nessarose says, "I have to...I have to...magic spell you." that just sounds....weird.

Jun 18 2006, 03:45 AM
The cape part isn't really a humor funny, it's more of a "oooooh" funny, because now the look for The Wicked Witch of the West we have always known is complete.
And the skybird isn't Winnie's fault, it's Stephen's :ha:

Wow, I have a very different idea of what is awkward and corny than y'all seem to! This is quite interesting. Another line I don't like is "You look positively.....emerald!" Well, ain't that witty? I also agree with what someone said earlier about Winnie over-doing all the cute Ozian words. Especially when Nessarose goes "If you hadn't shown me that horrendible book!" I mean, that's supposed to be a serious scene, right? Boq is friggin almost dying! What was the point in throwing in such an awkward word that's apparently supposed to be funny?

i thought "horrendible" fit into the scene and the lines. i know it's a serious scene, but i didn't think "horrendible" took away from it, it's not as obvious and cute as other words like some of the ones Galinda says earlier (can't think of any off the top of my head now)

I only got a little chuckle out of the melons, lemons & pears, oh my line. I wouldn't say its exactly corny, but its not a huge laugh out loud moment for me. I think perhaps some of the lines are meant to be corny. Especially when Elphaba & Glinda are in the Emerald City, they are still young and sort of innocent/naieve/childish still. Maybe thats just me though.
