and the way Carole Shelley says "...and Shut Up!" to Glinda is weird...

I agree! It sounds like something that the evil lady with the crazy red hair would say to the little girl in the old Disney move "The Rescuers"! :ha:

I think it's supposed to be that way, to show the scary side of morrible and how quickly she would turn on Glinda; also, it's critical because that's when Glinda realizes that she cares about her friend and what happens to her. (although, you're right, Carole Shelly is kind of awkward...)

The line that I've been known to cringe at is "For the first time I feel...wicked". I understand the connection Schwartz draws between the different definitions of wicked (malicious vs. sexy, if so ineloquently put) and I like how he draws from NOMTW melodically in ALAYM, but it is difficult to deliver that line in a way that doesn't seem forced and punny (in a bad way) to me, though there was one time that I liked it. I can imagine how hard it is to deliver that line in such a way that it doesn't fall flat on its face.

All the young tweeny fans who are like "it's the part of the show where she becomes evil!!!!11" make it worse.
Pretty much all of Holzman's book is a travesty, it feels more like the general outline of a show than an actual plot. Somewhere between the scenes Fiyero decides that he loves Elphaba and has had an ongoing affair with her and both he and Glinda get brain/personality transplants.
clockworkgirl21
I've always hated, "It's tomorrow!" I don't even know what that means.

I think shes meaning like its past 12 am, meaning the next day
WickedIsTheShiz
Yeah, I always thought that maybe adding a sound effect of the clock striking 12
would make that part of the show understandable.
Apster
"Where do you live?"
"The other castle."

A poorly placed joke, seeing as it's in the middle of a semi-tense scene...it seems out of character for Elphaba to be asking that kind of question at this particular moment.

Well, since the lighting gradually gets more red/orange as the scene progresses (and when she says "It's tomorrow!", the lighting is considerably brighter and more red/orange in colour), I've always assumed that they'd been awake all night partying (DTL lyric: "...we will dance still it's light...") and by the time the girls have returned to their dorm, it's almost sunrise.

But I could be wrong.
YourFiyero
"It was your roommates idea"
"What, Elphaba?"

Ummm no, your other roommate... :|

LMFAO I don't think I've ever realized that.

Yeah. I never did get that.

But on a more positive note: I guess I just have a weird sense of humor, but I've always enjoyed the corny jokes. It always lightened the mood.

As for the Morrible line "he'll do much for you", I really loved how Miriam Margolyes implied there WAS a sexual relationship between them. I thought it was perfect.

The line that's always irritated me is Glinda's "C'mon, they're just shoes, let it go". I dislike how the silver slippers were never really given a meaning in the musical (it would only take a line to suggest the shoes' power could be used by the Wizard). This just sticks out like a sore thumb to me for cheap laughs.
broadwaypunk
It's alright. I always thought she put it in there for like one of those awkward teen moments.
Magnolia
I really hate the "I feel wicked" line too.
wickedlafan
The worst line of the whole show is, "Well of course, its daytime."

It never gets a laugh and I cringe every time I hear it.

I agree that's a terrible line. I think Winnie could've done alot better.
degeorgetitanic
its not nec. a line...but I think they could have done without Fiyero swinging in on a vine. Sure it gets a laught but it is sooo tacky

When was the daytime line delivered? I can't think when it's said...

I've never like the "the artichoke is steammed" line. Surely Galinda could have been given a better and funnier insult!

Yes!!! I hate that line too! I think it's needlessly bitchy. I don't know, maybe it's just because I get more worked up when people tell me I am! lol
LindsayTheGood
My least favorite line is Morrible's "Such wingspan!"
greenismyfavcolor
I have always thought that the Elphie's secret part is awkward. It's supposed to be, obviously. I mean awkward in a bad way.
saintaelphaba
This has been bugging me recently. The line "spells are unreversible" Morrible delivers to Elphaba after she created the winged monkeys.

After a year or so taking private classes with Morrible in sorcery, you'd think Elphaba would KNOW they cannot be reversed! Basic sorcery 101 surely!! Perhaps her line should be altered to "spells are unreversible, you know that!".

YES! That's something that's always bugged me! Surely it would have come up in classes by that point!

One of my other least-favourit lines has to be "I'd be so happy I could melt". It's just so...tacky. I groaned when I first heard the line on the cast album.
clockworkgirl21
Actually, I've always liked the "I could melt" line.
degeorgetitanic
^Yea, it adds a sense of irony in there. I mean TWAI's end is very ironic
"And I'll stand there with the Wizard, feeling things I've never felt" - When Elphaba finds out the Wizard is bad...her emotions overcome her to a sense, and she feels betrayl with yea, she has felt anger towards the world and such but I dont think betrayl she has really felt, esp. since the Wizard is the one she hoped to be a father figure to her.

"And though I never show it, I'd be so happy I could melt!"- No need to explain lol

"And so it will be for the rest of my life, and Ill want nothing else till I die!" - She basicaly says later that she will fight the Wizard till the day she dies...which she does...kinda lol

"Held in such high esteem, when people see me they will scream" - she is held high up as an enemy, and when people see her...they do scream lol
Man in Chair
The whole song is filled with that stuff, some of it less subtle than other -
"And when I meet the Wizard, what I've waited for since birth" - obviously referring to the Wizard being her biological father

Being one such example.
clockworkgirl21
My favorite foreshadowing moment is the line "They'll be a celebration throughout Oz that's all to do with me."
Tayzer
I hate the "do me up". It is obvious she is already done up. They couldn't have thought of something else?

I like this line, and appreciate the foreshadowing that it presents, but always thought it sounded a bit clunky. The way it's worded, it's really obvious there's supposed to be a double-meaning to it.

I rather like it too. It would be better if it actually foreshadowed Elphaba's death though. Urgh, if only I had a pen to cross out the last 2 pages of the libretto.

I hate when "limits!" in Defying Gravity is sort of yelled instead of sung. It sounds better when no emphasis is put on it.
DefyingGravity1991
am i the only one who dosnt like this rhym?

" dreams, the way we planned EM"
"if we work in tandem"

it dosnt both me that much ciz i LOVE this song, its my all time fave thats out there... no joke. but the way they rhymed "Em" is odd. idk
inick1224
I just think the entire show is chocked full of "ear"-candy... haha Idk how to put it into words. I just think Winnie (I forget how to spell her last name) is just brilliant with the libretto. I love it. Pure and simple.
and_1987
I'm not to crazy about the part where Elphaba said to the Wizard, "That everything was all smoke and mirrors" during the song "Wonderful."

I do agree, I think the emphasis should be more on "through" or even "accepting".
