I'm confused. I thought she was but the maunt said something about how Glinda was probably named after Saint Glinda. I just want to know if Glinda and Saint Glinda are the same person or not. huh.gif
NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished
No they are not the same. Glinda is Glinda the good or Lady Glinda. Saint Glinda was just an old saint named in the book many times.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

kind of off-topic but I have a question bould Glinda as well, why did she dye her hair red when she got older. It still looks very pretty but I was wondering why she died her hair red in the Wiz of Oz while in Wicked she has blonde hair. Did she dye her hair red in SOAW? huh.gif

Well, the MGM WoO movie (which I assume you are talking about when you mention a red-haired Glinda), the WoO book, Wicked the book, and Wicked the musical are four separate entities. So I'm not sure if there is an explanation for the different hair color. It could make for fun speculation or an interesting fan fic, though.

Please keep in mind, however, that I haven't read SoaW yet (so I can't speak for what Glinda does in it), and I haven't read Wicked (the book) in a while.

I want your icon, but only the part where she's doing the "western sky" hand motion... is that from the website!?

So bada**!
I'm new, so don't listen to me too closely:

About the hair thing. I've only read Wicked the book, E.L. Baum's, so I really can't tell you (especially because I haven't had the chance to read SoaW yet). I think that a good way to compare it is to compare Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux to Phantom by Susan Kay. There are things in the original book that are completely different in Kay's. Obviously you all know that...but I thought I'd post it in my words..

Honestly, I think the real reason Glinda has red hair in the movie is because of the whole technicolor thing. That's why they changed the shoes from silver to ruby. Technicolor was this brand new thing when they were filming and I think they had a little too much fun playing around and seeing what they could do. But that's just my opinion.

Also, I don't remember if Glinda's hair color is ever mentioned in Baum's books. That would be an interesting thing to look into.

Welcome to the board! Don't worry about logging in mishaps, everyone gets them - the board likes to trick us all with it's "log in twice" malarky wink.gif

I never had trouble logging in.
In Baum's book, Glinda has red hair.
In the musical, the blonde hair gives her more of a personality.

Just a question... I don't rememberit mentioning in the book that Glinda's hair was blonde... it may have... but I was wondering if the musical made her hair blonde or if it was specified in the book? I honestly can't recall.
Fabala Thropp109
It was blonde, it said so in the first chapters of her coming to Shiz.

I'm FAIRLY certain it's mentioned as being red, or red-gold. Been a while since I read the books.

In SoaW, Glinda mentions having peroxide for hair as well. So I imagine her to be a natural red-head who chooses to go blonde :-) Seems like something Galinda would have gone for!
Fabala Thropp109
I like her better blonde, anyway!!!

In the book Wicked, Glinda is originally Galinda, but after her auntie (the lady that goes to school with her to look after her) dies she changes her name to Glinda because that is what she always called her. Saint Glinda's mauts are who Elphiba stays with in the book after Fiyero is killed by the guards and before she goes to see Fiyero's wife.

The red hair thing is vague because in some of the original books Glinda's hair is red and in some it is blonde. There was never a whole lot of cohesiveness in the Braun's books. She was a red head in the MGM WoO because of the whole Technicolor thing and it is blonde in Wicked because I think they were trying to go for the classic dittsy blonde thing!

No no, that is only in the stage version....the book is very different.

Actually in the book, Galinda meets Dr. Dillamond on the train to Shiz and he calls her Glinda. But then she corrects him and says it's Galinda. So from then on Dr. Dillamond calls her Galinda (it wasn't that he couldn't pronounce it but a simple misunderstanding). She changes her name as a belated apology to Dr. Dillamond for treated him rudely that time at the train station after his death.

Ama Clutch (the woman who goes to school with Galinda) dies after the name change though she came up with that strange illness the night of Dr. Dillamond's death.

Edited to add: the name Ama Clutch used to call Galinda all the time, and Elphaba too sometimes was 'duckie'.
