Hey'all....
So now that I just saw the show, I have a couple of questions! WARNING -SPOILERS!!!
Ok first of all, Im sure I saw a thread for this a long while ago, but for the life of me I really can't seem to find it right now.... Anyhow... how exactly do they do the Elphaba shadow at the end of NOMTW?? Is the actress standing back there every night in a costume waving around?
Also -
When Boq gets turned into the Tinman, is there another actor that is behind the closet and he walks out? there is like no time for a change there... but then the actor's voice is the same as the Boq's? LOL And when Boq is in with the Witch hunters later, is that the actor who played Boq before?
... same kind of question with Fiyero... when he comes out at the VERY END of the show to get Elphaba, is taht the same Fiyero actor as the rest of the show? But then how does he change his makeup so fast for the curtain call?
And one final question thats been bothering me for a while.....
When Idina fell on her 2nd to last show, did Sho have to change and go in for only like the very last 5 min on stage? What happened - did the show stop for a while so they could get her into makeup/wardrobe? And if Idina went to the hospital in the second act dress, what did Sho wear? LOL Thanks!!!
Thats all... for now lol

Its projected onto the screen. Nope the actress does not do it.

Yes, different actor. The Boq actor's voice has been prerecorded and that's what you hear. But that is the real Boq during MoTWH
...

Its a mask I believe. I know its Kris at the end I can see him lol. But yeah... someone else elaborate on this one for me please.

They had a 15 minute intermission to get Sho ready. She went on from after the melting on...
Sho had her own dress lol

How fun that you saw it!! I'll try my best to answer your questions:
1.) I'm pretty sure it's just a projection that they're showing on the back of the stage.
2.) Yes. They have another actor backstage in the Tin Man costume. When Elphaba rolls him behind the mirror the other actor gets in the chair. The part where the Tin Man is screaming is a recording.
3.) Yeah. That's the same Fiyero. I imagine they spend the entire time he's off stage after that point getting him into makeup/costume.
4.) Yup. They stopped the show for about 30 minutes or so and had Shoshana go on for the last 5 minutes. "The show must go on" really came into picture there lol. The standby's have their own costumes, so Shoshana just wore hers and Idina wore the one she was in to the hospital.
I hope that helped some!

Shoshana did go on, in full costume and make up (and set the 7 minute make up record). Idina wore her costume and make up to whatever hospital she was taken to, further proving the "only in NY theory."

Hey thanks for all the info!!! It really helped to clear some things up!!
Thats insane that they had to stop the show for 30 min to get sho into makeup and everything just for like 5 min on stage.... that sux for the audience too...like the show is almost over! haha

I'd love to see the look on the reception nurse's face. Or on the rest of the patients in the ER. I wonder if they thought it was the green that was wrong with her.
Psht, stressful or not, working as a nurse in NYC HAS to be interesting, which is why... that's where I'm thinking of working. XD

my friend was at that show...trust me the crowd was not upset about pausing for 30 mins...they were more worried and scared...because they knew something went wrong and just became extremely scared...they did enjoy what was the rest of the show though.

I've never really thought of it before, but how was JLT for the end of the show? From how close she and Idina seemed to be, I would think she would be awfully worried to do the rest of the show.

well if youve seen the show you know that glinda during the melting scene is outside of the scrim...so you see her...so at first jen didnt know WHAT happened...she heard idina scream and heard the noises, but didn't know if she was okay or if she was going to continue from there, so she just paused for a bit, then she started to slink over to the wings and realized what happened and just went to idina's side until she got put on the stretcher and driven away. According to fan's who saw idina coming out and being put in the ambulence...she was laughing and joking around with joby(her dresser). After that is a story that only idina can tell well. Just go to youtube and search for idina menzel's fell into a hole story...i uploaded it from one of her concerts in massachusetts

Why don't standbys just fully costume and make-up themselves so if an accident happens, they can just run into the scene? that would make a lot more sense...

Umm... a MAJOR waste of not-really-cheap makeup there is why. ;-) As well as wasting time and effort on the makeup artist's part.

Along with, there would be no way to guess which costume the actor/actress would be wearing when the accident would occur...

Well. I guess it's like how often do accidents happen? It wouldn't make much sense to have to get them greenified and everything to just sit there. Plus - they're allowed I think to go within 5 blocks (?) of the theatre, and they probably wouldn't want to be running around outside painted green lol. it would be a lot of work to get them ready "just incase."

basically what krimz says...but the standbys do have to stay within a specific amount of distance from the theater once the show begins so that if something tramatic like that DOES occur they can be called and come in to get ready as fast as possible....they arent allowed to come in before the show see that the regular is on and go home...they have to be nearby....
i was outside during the show once when kristin got sick in the middle of the show....my friend and i were talking to our friend who worked the stage door at the time and randomly we see laura bell RUN IN...next thing we know kristin runs out sick...it was the speediest transition ever...but it happens

A stand-by story from the recent revival of La Cage aux Folles that's of some relevence.
As some know, the recent Bway revival of La Cage starred Gary Beach (The Producers) and Daniel Davis (The Nanny). I was in the audience for one of the first previews, I believe it was a Friday night. Davis had laryngitis and rather risk completley blowing out his voice, he stopped the show during With You On My Arm, told the crowd the story, apologized, and walked off, to a supportive and wildly applauding crowd.
John Hillner, his understudy, had obviously never gone on in the part, didn't even have a rehearsal (understudies and standbys learn the parts on their own and then have full rehearsals following the opening), and went on following Davis. Fortunately, since it was an early preview, Jerry Zaks, the director was there, as was Jerry Mitchell, the choreographer. Mitchell taught Hillner most of the steps while Harvey Fierstein, the librettist, got on stage and did a Q&A with the audience until Hillner was ready.
The audience, clearly a theater crowd, loved it. Gary made a nice speech at the end of the show. Hillner was fantastic, albeit nervous.

I don't know if this is right, but this is what I'm pretty sure of:
Elphaba's shadow is a projection because the movements maintain a perfect speed, and are the same at every show (to the best of my knowledge)
I think the actor playing Boq actually does change because I vaguely remember someone saying that one time when they saw the show they were far to the left and could see his change. (I mean, I think he has more time there than Glinda does to get out of the bubble dress and wig into the Shiz outfit and wig) If not, it is the actor during MotWH.
About Idina's fall, I have absolutely no idea, sorry! Maybe one of the older, more knowledgable members could tell you.
And it is the actor playing Fiyero in the Scarecrow costume, most definitely, I know that one for fact.
It's another actor playing the tinman during that scene. I asked Robb Sapp and he said it'another actor. He would have no time to slab on that silver makeup and difficult costume.
