I've always wondered this, but just kept forgetting to post a topic on it! In the Gershwin, i believe there are two trap doors, one w/ a hydraulic lift and one w/ a staircase thingy, but how do u actually get up in the trap doors? is there like a little room or something w/ an elevator like thing? in the LA wicked interview w/ Eden she said something about being on the ladder leading up to the trap door right b4 one of her entrances... how do u get to the ladder, and what's underneath the stage? sorry for all the questions, but it's just something that has always bothered me!

At the front of the stage there is a trapdoor with an elevator under it. It's used for the lover in NOMTW, No Good Deed, and when Elphaba melts. Another trapdoor is in the back of the stage that is used when Elphaba comes out of hiding after she's "melted." Tbat one, I believe has a ladder that Elphaba stands on. There is also the trap door in the front stage-left gear. It's used during "Defying Gravity" and other points in the show. I'm pretty sure all these are accessed through the areas under the stage. I hope that helps!

That trap door is too far downstage to be used when she melts. Methinks the elevator and the ladder are somehow interchangeable in the other trap door, or there's another one entirely.

i believe she just runs off stage behind the scrim...like she bends down as if melting then it turns darkand she runs off...then at the end end thres like a well feature...its very strange lolol

I think it is for the finale because she doesn't have the act 2 dress on.

She's waiting for Fiyero to open the trap door, so she has the trap door dress one.
You know, the one that's just plain black.

is there a reason why they use like a plain black dress would the act II dress get caught when she came up from the trap door?

this is just my own speculation on why she wears a different dress, so dont take it as the ACTUAL reasoning.
I always thought that because she "melts" she had well leave her outfit she was wearing behind since her clothes doesnt melt just she does. But who knows what shes wearing underneath her dress....no one.

I was amazed at just how seethrough that dress is!
I agree with Samantha about why it is used. I think it also acts as a sort of metaphorical signal that shes started a new journey in her life. At the begining till popular, she was in the blue skirt and jacket (or dress, without the jacket), showing the socially uncomfortable, Galinda-hating youngest Elphie you see. After popular, she wears a white taylored shiz uniform coat, where she acts slightly older- shes developed a friendship with Galinda, and has developed feelings for Fiyero. In the Emerald City, she wears the plain black dress, which is iconic for her. Its her wearing something of her own, not a uniform, showing who she is.
Act 2, she wears that amazing dress, showing how long shes been on the run for. It (as well as the DG dress) are iconic for the WWotW. Throught act 2, the dress is subtally changed. The first time you see it, in WWotE, Elphaba wears a shawl around her, cloaking the bodice, where she still tries to care for her sister. The she wears it without, and then later, during the catfight scene to her melting, she wears the 'cape' segments, attached to her back and shoulders, where you see her descent into anger and almost madness, and she gives into her title.
That last dress is so plain, that after the emmensly complex act 2 dress, it shows that she has left that time and person behind. It signalls a new period in her life, where she is out of the hatefull Oz, and helping A/animals and others with Fiyero.
hmm, a bit longer then I had anticipated, but I think you get the idea.
