i need brushes for ps.. i know you have to look at Lj, but I dont know where to start, can anyone give me some leads ??? smile.gif

I don't really use brushes often, but I don't get the from LJ. I normally just google it and go to a site...pretty easy smile.gif

If anybody knows how to wrap text around an image... please please!.. write a tutorial or send me a link to a really good one.. im having alot of difficulties with this, and I really want to know how you do this! smile.gif
Defyingravity07
If you have Illustrater there is type on path, and you could trace the path around the image. There is not a way to do it in photoshop.
RockTheSoul
I'm feeling generous today... and I'm avoiding my English final at all costs. Made this for another forum so, graphic makers enjoy. Just do me a favor, if you use the banner you make using this tut, credit me for the style. Thankks :]]]]

Made in: PSCS3 Extended
Made for: PS, but should be translatable (minus selective coloring)
Category: signatures, blends
Images used: Shoshana Bean ++ Brush ++ Grunge

We will be making this:

There is selective coloring in the tut but I'm sure it is fairly translatable. I hope it is understandable. Any comments or questions? Feel free to ask and I'll try to help as best I can. I recommend you use a picture that has a solid background or a picture with a background that isn't busy. For the look we're going for it would just work a lot better that way.

Step One: Click

Take your picture and copy and paste it in a way you'd like onto your document. I'm making mine on a 500x200 pixel background so it can be used as a signature or whatnot. Use a feathered eraser tool to make it smoothly transition into the background of your document.

Step Two: Click

This is a simple effect that I tend to overuse but I really like how it looks on a lot of my blends. All I did was duplicate the layer with the picture, desaturate it completely, and shift it a few spots to the right of the initial picture. I set it to multiply and then lowered the opacity to 50% so it doesn't overpower the initial picture. Use the eraser tool to erase any excess parts of the picture that are over the colored one.

Step Three: Click

Now, normally text is added last but in this case we're going to add it within the next two steps. The rest of the banner will revolve around the text placement. I usually like to offset my text with a simple brush or texture behind it so for this banner I'm going to use THIS brush/texture. I used it as an image (I HATE brushes... so annoying) but it can also be downloaded as a brush off somewhere on Livejournal (as far as I'm aware). I placed the design next to the images and erased any part of it that overlapped with the pictures.

Step Four: Click

Now for the text. I'm simply writing "Shoshana Bean" next to the images though anything would work. I placed my text over what I did in step three and then rasterized the layer so i can again, erase whatever overlaps with the images.

Step Five: Click

For this step, I went back to my original image and used the lasso tool to cut out Shoshana from the picture. I then copied and pasted her into her own transparent document and shrunk her to a little less than the height of the banner. Then, I copied and pasted her repeatedly into the document over the text "shoshana bean", each time i pasted her in i lowered the opacity a bit so they're not all the same and shifted the layers around so the darkest is on top. Using a feathered eraser tool I erased the bottom half of the three pics so they don't overlap with the text.

Step Six: Click

Now for a little flair. First I took THIS texture and inversed it. Then I copied and pasted it over everything I have so far and set it to multiply. I used the eraser tool to erase some of the areas around her face to make them stand out a bit more. Then I added tiny text and set the opacity to 60%. I also added in some x's for a bit more balance.

That's it for the actual design of the banner. I merged everything together and sharpened the entire base a bit. I'm a sucker for sharpness.

Here is what the blend should look like so far:

Now for some coloring. Now when I play around with coloring I like to duplicate my base so I always have my original blend before playing around with color at the bottom; just in case I mess up royally and want to start the coloring from scratch.

Step Seven: Click

Selective Coloring Layer 1
Opacity 100%

Reds (+100, +100, +27, 0)
Yellows (+100, -67, -38, -13)
Neutrals (-28, 0, +41, -30)

Step Eight: Click

Selective Coloring Layer 2
Opacity 50%

Reds (-98, 0, +100, -37)
Yellows (+100, 0, -100, 0)
Neutrals (+54, -29, -41, +20)

Step Nine: Click

New Adjustment Layer > Levels
Opacity 100%

Channel RBG (0, 0.74, 255)
Channel Red (0, 1.54, 255)
Channel Green (0, 1.13, 255)

Step Ten: Click

New Fill Layer with the dark blue color #000033
Set the layer to exclusion

Step Eleven: Click

New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation
Opacity 100%

Step Twelve: Click

Finally, merge the entire thing together. Duplicate the final layer and set the top layer to soft light with an opacity of 80%. Voila, you are complete! You can add a border in if you'd like as well.

Does anyone think using textures from sites in a graphic contest is cheating?
RockTheSoul
^ No?
galiindafiied
haha. chrzty would be in trouble if it was cheating. cool.gif
Defyingravity07
My Web design teacher seems to think that to use the textures from Hybrid-Genises I have to recreate them which is like impossible.
WickedLittleGreenGirl821
i have a question. i have photoshop elements version 6 and i was wondering how you would add new brushes. Thanks!

I'mPhosphorescent
I made a coloring tut for another forum and thought I'd share it with you lucky fools. laugh.gif

We're going from to

Start with this photo. Crop, sharpen as needed.

Duplicate, set to screen however much you need. Mine was 42%

New Selective Color layer, settings are:
Reds: -100, 0, +100, +100
Yellows: 0, -100, -100, 0
Whites: +90, 0, 0, 0
Neutrals: +25, -13, -31, 0

Press OK

Another Selective Color layer, settings:
Reds: -100, 0, +100, 0
Neutrals: +23, 0, -20, +30

Press OK

New Hue/Sat layer:
Master: +30-40, depending on your photo.

And that's it! Told ya it was easy

I fiddled with it a bit and found that if you switch the saturation layer from the end to the beginning, you get a nice result as well.

Let me know how you like it, and I'd love to see your results!

Hey guys! Do any of you know any basic tutorials? LIke for someone who's opened up Photoshop CS only a few days ago? Should I sort of play around with it first? Thanks!
western_sky
I tried (and sort of got off track, lol) using one of Christy's tutorials. This is my end product:

I was a little confused with the feathered eraser? I ended up just lassoing. So any tips on the eraser would be good.
RockTheSoul
Since one of my other tutorials seemed to be liked... here's another one.

Tutorial name: A Latte and a Prayer
Made in: CS3
Made for: All programs
Category: Blends
Images used: See below!
Other: Enjoy!

A fairly quick tutorial for this small blend I made... as requested by Danasaur on RCR!

This is by no means as complex as it looks. Just a variety of textures blended together the right way to create the overall effect! I used two pictures of Annaleigh Ashford for this blend. For the large main picture I unsaturated the entire picture (minus the flower in her hair) just to make it pop a bit more.

The following images and textures were used:
ANNALEIGH IMAGE ONE
ANNALEIGH IMAGE TWO
FRAME BY CHAOTIC FAE
FIRE TEXTURE BY KHORASKI?
CLOUD IMAGE
GRUNGE TEXTURE BY FANATIK

FIRST STEP
Take your main, unsaturated image and crop it to your liking. I made my initial canvas 500x350 and I slightly off-centered my unsaturated image (so there was more room for the frame on the other side).

SECOND STEP
The next thing you want to do is place your frame onto the canvas and position it so it only slightly overlaps the main background image. You don't want it covering the face of the back picture, but you also don't want it just randomly slapped onto the canvas. I recommend slightly rotating the frame so it subtly looks tilted. Then crop and place your second image within the frame and merge the frame and image together.

You should now have two total layers: the background image and the frame on top.

THIRD STEP
To add a little flair in the background, I just added some simple textures BETWEEN the two current layers. I placed a cloud texture along the bottom by inverting it and then setting it to multiply. I lowered the opacity of it a tad. Then I added the fire-like texture (set to screen) behind hte frame just to add a little more color and spark to the piece.

FOURTH STEP
I added my text in before adding in the final texture and before doing any selective coloring. The text here was very simple. I chose a nice scripty font and put a big "A" along the right side of the frame to accent it. Then I chose a small font (I used Ariel) and put a simple quote along the other side of the frame. Not much text is needed for this piece to make it look good, and it could even go without if you feel that it looks better without any text.

FIFTH STEP
I chose a grunge texture by fanatik to use as my final layer. I first lightened up the lighter portions of the grunge texture (with Levels), blurred the lighter parts a bit, and then copied and pasted it over all my other layers. I then set the texture to "color burn".

SIXTH STEP
Finally, play around with selective coloring and add in your own coloring effects to make the piece pop even more. I tried to add some warm coloring effects just to go along with the fiery glow it has going on behind the frame. I also added in a border just to make the piece a little larger.

Any questions? Feel free to ask!
I'mPhosphorescent
And my turn.
HOKAY. So today we will be making this little sucker.

Mostly I'm just going to guide you through the coloring. I'm not posting any of the textures I used UNLESS you really want it for some reason. Just shout. There are A LOT of color layers, so be prepared for a lengthy tut.

First Step
Open a blank canvas, average blend size. Paste your photos, blend however you like. I just use layer masks. For an added effect, I used the rectangle marquee tool and created a little background thingy for the main photo. I also used a crinkly paper texture as my base to give it a little spice.

Second Step-Coloring
New Fill Layer-fill with #26025a, set to Lighten at 61%.

New Curves Layer-Reds:Input 72, Output 88 // Greens:Input 81, Output 103

New Selective Color Layer-Reds: -25,-100,100 // Yellows: -100,0,0,0 // Cyans: 100,0,0,0 // Whites: 0,0,-100,0 // Neutrals: -15,0,-20,0

New Selective Color Layer-Reds: -100,0,100,0 // Yellows: -100,0,100,0 // Cyans: 100,0,0,0 // Whites: 0,0,-100,0 // Neutrals: 15,0,-40,0

New Selective Color Layer-Reds: -100,0,100,0 // Yellows: -100,-100,100,0 // Cyans: 100,0,0,0 // Whites: 0,0,100,0 // Neutrals: -15,0,-11,0

New Fill Layer- fill with #4f4f53, set to Hard Light at 74%

New Brightness/Contrast Layer-Contrast +29

New Fill Layer-fill with #f1f34a, set to Soft Light at 100%

New Selective Color Layer-Reds: -100,0,100,100 // Yellows: -74,7,-14,0 // Cyans: 100,-100,100,100 // Neutrals: 55,-3,-50,14

New Selective Color Layer-Reds: -100,0,100,10 // Yellows: -100,-100,-100,0 // Neutrals: 22,-3,-5,-2

New Selective Color Layer-Reds: -25,31,8,41 // Yellows: 100,0,-24,26 // Greens: 100,100,-43,100 // Whites: -21,-14,-20,-2 Neutrals: 4,1,-4,6

New Fill Layer-fill with #e5e5e5, set to Color Burn at 100%

New Levels Layer-RGB: 15,1.17,255

New Fill Layer-fill with #dad8d8, set to Color Burn at 100%

New Fill Layer-fill with #ab0b0b, set to Difference at 22%

And that's it! All the little touches: the dots on the left, orange flare, white flowery thing, bracket, are all brushes.

And that was probably not clear or helpful at all. So if you need me to clarify something, just ask! And I'd love to see results.

Oh the SHINE is in Carnivalee Freakshow, and the small text is Print Clearly.

Random photoshop question: I'm working with Photoshop CS3...can you apply different filters to different layers? Or can you only have one filter over your whole composition? Sorry if this is totally a no brainer, I'm a newbie.
RockTheSoul
Different layers can have different filters. =)

Does anyone have any tutorials or experience with coloring black and white pictures? Not pictures that are blank like a coloring book, but going from black and white to color, sort of like they used to do sometimes with older movies? I use Artweaver (free program) so it doesn't have as many nifty tools as Photoshop or other programs... I'm mainly having problems with coloring skin and not having it look 'too' fake.

AlliMauzeyFan
I've just downloaded a free trial of Photoshop elements 7 and have no idea how to make banners using it. I want to be able to blend images together and use layers. Has anyone got any tutorials...simple tutorials lol, for making banners?
Wicked_Dee
What is the best program to use to make Banner's and Avi's??
