So we can all use a little help with our graphics.

Request tuts and post ones you've made here.

I've made two.

located here and here

both are made in PS CS but are translateable.

Post away!
Cierra
Oh I remember this type of thread on the old UL. I loved it! I'm going to look at your tuts now!
dee-dalli-fan
These are all quite old because I haven't done any in AGES but here goes:

here and here

I am aware that some of the textures from the first one no longer work due to the community being closed. Sorry!

Selective Coloring. Anyone?
oh so mar
for PS or to get the same effect on PSP?
girl in the mirror
There are PLENTY selective coloring tutorials on icon_tutorial. It drives me insane because it always looks so good and I have PSP7 so I can't do it.
And with that I add, does anyone have any good substitues for selective coloring that look the same?
ShizKid

I have PSP8 so proboably the same effect on it.

Imagine how limited I feel with Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0. Very limited. However, playing with exclusion and saturation gives me good results. Also, knowing when to use your overlays and colour burns. If your's has the option, try playing with curves under New Adjustment Layer.
dee-dalli-fan
Remember Color Balance is your friend

Or, like me, make all your icons and stuff in PSP and then just do selective coloring in PS... It saves having to learn how to use both haha.
oh so mar
Color balance, color layers, and saturation works.

Ihad PSP for a while, but I think PS is SO much easier to use.
Cierra
Mar, I tried your second tut, and I changed it a little bit, and this is what I got, I don't know if I like it a lot, but w/e, I tried.

Nick Chopper
Often, it really helps to post the original image, too. That way, people can see how far you took an image, and decide on how to assist from there.
Galindaispopular
does anyone know some good tuts for gimp?
Cierra
Nick, were you talking to me, or somebody else? If it was me, this is basically the original, except for there was a black spot on Helen's face, and Idina's and Helen's names were in the upper right hand corner, which I edited out.

There's a bunch of gimp ones on icon_tutorial. You just have to look. That's basically where I find all my tutorials, they have everything.

I have adobe photoshop elements 5.0 and its sad because it's nearly impossible to translate everything,

You'll find that while a lot of parts are not translatable (selective colouring), Adobe Photoshop Elements can produce a good amount of graphic effects with just the practice. As I mentioned, my preference is playing with the layer effects and then applying the textures and brushes. Elements might be behind the other graphics' programs, but it's still been loyal to me.
Elphie_26
I know nick, just saying it's harder to translate tutorials  I know how to use my photoshop. Thank you though.

Didn't mean to offend. If it upsets you, you could always upgrade.

Thanks! I kinda combined both tuts a little bit. I was doing the first one, and it wasn't working, so I took the ending steps of your second one and that's how it turned out.

here's a tutorial i had made a couple months ago

CHRISTY'S SUPER DUPER ICON TUTORIAL
Done in Photoshop CS but could be translated into others...

From this: to this:

Select your base (Sharpen it a little, if you want)

Duplicate the base layer and set it to soft light

Create a Fill Layer and fill it with FEE5EB
Set this layer to Multiply and fiddle with the opacity

Create another Fill Layer and fill it with 0060FF
Set this layer to saturation and set the opacity as 30-40%

Create a Selective Coloring adjustment layer and set as follows:
Reds -40, 0, -30, -40
Blues 100, 100, -100, -80
Magentas 100, 100, 100, 100
Neutrals 40, 15, 30, -15

Now take this light texture, that I created and copy and paste as a new layer

Set the light texture to color burn

Then take this simple light texture and copy and paste as a new layer

Set the light texture to screen

Once you've completed all these steps, add in whatever text you'd like...
I used one of Amber's tiny text effects along with some font...
Then merge all the layers together, and duplicate the merged layer.
On the top layer, reduce the saturation completely. Then set the layer to lighten

And that's your finished product!
DelusionsOfGrandeur
Here's an awesome directory of tutorials that has everything. PS, PSP, Gimp, ImageReady, Animation Shop...it's really great.

Squeeeeee peoplemachines! I've wanted to know forever where she moved to, and the journal has always been dead! Clicked your link and it wasn't, so erm, thanks

http://dionisia2005.livejournal.com/97056.html is a good tutorial list

http://onlysweeter-x.livejournal.com/934.html#cutid1 My first tutorial is here, I don't like it anymore though! Woops. Uses selective colour!
Cierra
I think these should be stickied. Yepp.
Bubbly
I agree! The tutorials have been extremely helpful, especially the ones from the site Rachel posted.
Cierra
So, I decided I'm going to make a tutorial. I don't really care if it sucks, but it seems like fun. :drink: If I am using one of your textures, tell me and I'll credit.

This was done in Photoshop CS2, however it can easily be translated into others.

From this: to this:

1. Crop your base, duplicate it, and set it to Screen*80%

2. Go to image > adjustments > variations >> click once: more blue, more red, more magenta

3. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation >> saturation +46

4. Paste this: on to a new layer, and set it to soft light.

5. Paste this texture: and set it to lighten.

6. Paste this texture: and set it to lighten. For the image I am using, I rotated it around, and put it near the corner.

7. Add a border, and viola!

A couple of people in the past have asked me for tutorials on the free program PhotoPlus.

In case anyone else is interested, here is a very basic tutorial, mostly just covering blending, but also giving a few other tips.
Galindaispopular
I made this simple tut for GIMP

From this to this

1. Open the picture and crop around the face 100 by 100

2. Add a new layer as background color and use this color then click overlay.

3. Almost forgot open this and add it as layer and set it to screen

3. To add text click the text button I used Matura MT Script Capitals at 16 font in the color above

4. Open this as a layer and set it to screen at 55.9

ok so this is in the help thread but i decided that it would be better in here so here it is...creating moving Icons in ImageReady

Moving Icon from different pictures:

I’m going to assume you know how to get the images you want to use and resize them all to the same size, whatever size you may want. I am going to do this as a standard icon, 110 px x 110 px. I tend to do detailed directions because I have to do this for my mother all the time who is not the fastest person around, so if you go duh, sorry, just skip to something you don’t know.

1. Open Image ready

Basic introduction to the pallets:

Tool Pallet:
Holds the basic tools, close to the ones found in PhotoShop, note the preview in browser buttons

Layer Pallet:
Very important remember this one

Animation Pallet:
Another very important one

Web Content:
Don’t worry about this one for this

2. Ok create a new document, size it for the total size you want your image to be, I set mine to 110px x 110px. You can also choose if you want a transparent background or a solid color, select whatever you would like.

There are a few ways to go about the rest of the stuff; I will go through my way.

3. Open the images you want to have in your animation.
4. Drag each image into the document you created. Note that as you drag in images they all create their own layer. All layers are set to visible by default.

5. Position each layer where you would like them. You may have to turn on and off the visibility of the different layers so you can see where you are positioning them, this can be done by clicking on the small eye ball located next to each layer

** If you would like a boarder around your icon make sure that it is placed as the top layer and that there is nothing cut off by it in each layer**

6. Now that you have each layer positioned where you would like it, turn on the visibility of the layers you want to appear in the first frame and turn off the visibility of the others.

7. If you look at the animation pallet you can see that there is one frame already and that it shows only the layers that are visible. Under that frame is a small triangle, this is a pull down menu that allows you to choose how many times you want your animation to play, you have a choice between once or forever, choose forever.

8. Directly under the image in the animation pallet is a small pull down menu wit the time (the default is 0 sec.) Click on this. This is where you set how long each frame is displayed, you need to choose a time, depending how fast/slow you want your animation will depend on what you want to pick. The larger the number the longer it will be displayed before switching images, and vice versa. For this tutorial choose .5 sec.

9. Next you need to duplicate the frame. Click on the Duplicate/new frame button. This will completely duplicate the frame immediately before it.

10. Next you need to set what will be visible in the next frame. Make sure the second frame of the animation is highlighted and go to the layers pallet. In the layers pallet turn on the layers you want visible for the next frame and turn off the layers you do not want visible.

11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for each frame of your animation.
12. Your timeline in the animation pallet should look something like this now:

13. If you want you can now hit the preview in browser button and see what your animation looks like.

14. After viewing your animation you can go back and change the timing on the frames to speed it up or slow it down as necessary. Make sure if you decide that you want to change the speed that you change it on all the frames to make it consistent (unless you want certain images to remain longer than others and in that case go for it.
15. All that’s left is to save it. You need to save it twice (once for the web and once to save your original file if you want to be able to edit it later. To save it to edit later just do a normal save/save as. To save it for the web go to File > Save Optimized As.

16. Choose where you want your image saved, on the save as type: make sure that images only is the option selected. Save your file.

TA-DA.

You are done. Congratulations. There are of course more advanced things you can do such as having a transition happen between the frames (that is called a tween, it is located on the pull down menu on the side of the animation pallet). After having the basics down you should be able to do many different types of icons. If you want to import a video in you can, be forewarned though it takes a lot of memory and it can take a long time to load on computers. I don’t recommend doing more than maybe 50 frames, (a few seconds worth of video. The process is quite similar as to doing it with still images. All you have to do is open the video in Image ready, tell it if you want the full video or a selection (I always recommend a selection unless you have already cropped your video to the length you want). It will import they video in as frames and you can do what you want with it from there.

Hope this has been helpful.

For those of us who don't have selective colouring, or even colour balance. Made in Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0. Translatable.

We're going from this to this .

Start with your image and shrink it into a 100x100 base.

Duplicate the base and set the new layer to Screen 100%. Sharpen it once, just to be safe.

I didn't like the strong blue tones. I lowered the saturation and played around with the colouring on the base layer.

Duplicate the base and set it to Soft Light 100%.

Create a new Solid Colour Layer. Set it to Exclusion 100% with 061535.

Take this texture from LJ (don't know who it belongs to, sorry) and set it to Soft Light.

Play around with it until you're satisfied.

Duplicate your base and set it to Soft Light 50%. Bring it to the top.

Duplicate your base and set it to Screen 30%. Bring it to the top.

Create a Solid Colour Layer. Set it to Soft Light 50% with B39D84.

Create small text and put it down right after the base.

Now for a soft effect, create a Solid Colour Layer. Set it to Exclusion 50% with 392415.

There you go.
