I know that there have been many rumors about a movie based off of "Wicked". Kristin Chenoweth said on "The View" the other day that there is one being planned at the moment, but she's not sure if she and Idina will be in it because they are getting too old. There was a small rumor going around that Steven Speilburg is producing it and he wants Katharine McPhee to play Elphaba. I heard though that alot of this show's fans would hate to see her play that part.

Lies! All of them!
...Well, not so much lies, as rumours. But, still, only rumours. I would expect a great decline in ticket sales needs to occur before a movie is announced. That does not look like happening anytime soon. :disagree:

I wouldn't nescessarily say that they're getting too old.
Julia Murney plays Elphaba and she's 39.
Idina's 36 or turning 36 (can't remember) and she doesn't even look 30 yet.
I think it could be done.
And Kristin's only 38.

I agree with you here. Though some argue that they are supposed to be 19 or whatever in the first act, and they couldn't pull it off on screen. I say that modern technology is a wonderful thing, and it could easily be done. I think if a movie ever is made - and it may not be for a while yet, that Idina and Kristin (probably Norbert, Michelle, Joel and Carole too) should all be asked to play the roles first, even if they cannot do it. <-- my two cents!

This isn't a big deal, but Julia just turned 38, but I didn't think she was even that old. Birthday 01/14/69 she is younger than Kristin. As far as movie I will go crazy wondering who going to be cast in these coveted roles. I hope they do use the orginal cast as much as possible. But whatever they do I hope they don't screw it up. That said, they have hit the mark on every Elphie and G(a)linda to date.

Wow none of those ladies look a day over 30! I think Elphaba needs to have a matuirty about her, even in Shizz. I think with the age comes the life experience and voice. Some of the younger Elphaba's in my mind don't have the most powerful voices.

It's funny you should say that, because I always wondered if they were enough woman on the planet to do these roles consistly. Especially Elphie. I just wonder is Wicked own success going to water down the talent. Right now there are twenty Elphabas and G(a)lindas going on or standby eight times a weeks. I hope there are enough talented woman to continue to fill these roles. Everyone should see this show at it's best.

Actually, Idina and Kristin do not have the right of first refusal. It states the producers have the right to ask them to star in the movie if one is ever made. But the producers do not have to ask them, only if they want to. They could deem it inapprpriate because of their ages.
While I would love for them to do the movie, age on the big screen and age on a stage is different. 40 year olds don't play 20 something year olds in a movie.

i think where the matters of age are concerned with Kristin and Idina, they could always have other actors play the younger Elphaba and Glinda during their college years and then have Kristin and Idina play them when they are older. I do know there is a movie planned but again it is a matter of when. Probably not for a while.

I especially agree to those two parts.
Stephanie would do a really good job as Elphaba in a movie.
But I don't think they filmed the whole show then, because I believe Equity only allows up to 30 minutes of promotional footage to be shot.
If they were to just film the stage version, given it has the right cast, it would be awesome!
And I don't know why people are saying it wouldn't work on screen, I can picture the whole thing as a film.

I know I'm in the minority but I think a movie could be really awesome. While nothing beats the live theatre experience for me, there is so much you can do in a movie as far as sets, special effects, etc. because you are not limited to one stage. If it was done well, a Wicked movie could be amazing. It could also allow people to experience the story who cannot afford to go to the theatre, because let's face it - those tickets are pretty pricey!
As far as casting, I hope they will stick with Broadway performers as they did for the Rent movie and not let Hollywood actors play the roles.
I definitely see this movie happening eventually. It seems to be the trend lately to make musicals into movies, and considering how popular Wicked is, I don't see how they would not do it.
One Short Day
Apr 2 2007, 07:36 PM
No thanks, I'll stick with the musical, unless they do a high budget adaptation of the book.
Broadway movies, in case anyone didn't see the memo, don't typically do very well, and leave much to be desired among its core fan bases.
And no offense, but Idina's done the show enough, I'd like to see someone else who has done the portrayal do it.

Apr 2 2007, 10:10 PM
I highly doubt a movie would decline ticket sales for the theater...if anything, it would make it become more popular and increase sales. Movie and live theater are two different worlds. I think it would be a good thing for the show by the time the movie is being advertised...I guarantee it will help raise sales. And after the premier and hype of the movie dies down, people will still want to go see it live, believe me. It will be similar to what happened with Rent...it's still as popular as ever.

I had this dream a couple of weeks ago about the 'Wicked film.'
It was really dark and eerie and I remember that Steph was Elphaba and this girl with long dark hair was Glinda. (No idea why).
I think the only way a film would work is if they don't make it all happy a bubbly...it needs to be darker like the novel, but follow the storyline of the musical.
That's just my oppinion, though. Actually I would prefer for there not to be a Wicked film. I would be crushed if it was ruined.

I don't know... This is Hollywood. I would not at ALL be surprised to see a musical movie done in the style of the WOO.... with Hollywood big-names, and lots of merchendise for the kiddies. *Shudders*
As for the off-chance of a book-movie. if you want to hop over to fanfiction.net, I wrote a summary of a Disney version of the book called Disney's Wicked. *Shameless self-plug over*
Personally, I would love a musical, OBC movie. This has alot to do with the fact that I have been unable to see the show, even after begging/saving money for over a year and a half. And I have a girlcrush on Idina Menzel.

I dont see why it would be bad if it were stylistically the same as The Wizard of Oz..I love Wicked as much as the next person, but its not like its the holy grail of theatre..Its not perfect by any means, but it seems like the ideal candidate to be made into a movie..They'd obviously have to tweak it a bit and change some things.Look at Chicago for example...its a completely barebones theatrical production with no sets and all black costumes, and they made it into an incredible movie.
I think some things would have to be changed though..Fiyero, Boq and Nessarose would all need larger parts..The Fiyero/Elphie love relationship would probably need to be more in depth..The play relies a lot on effects..Like the lift effect..whereas flying on film is really nothing too special nowadays, so they'd have to change some things in the storyline to give it more punch I think.
I love Idina and KC too, but I think its a bad idea that they be in the movie. Out of all the Wicked performers, Megan Hilty is really the only one I can imagine playing a young character and an older character in the same movie. Most of the performers convey the youthfulness of the first Act in the way they present themselves, and on camera, you have to act it and look it.

it's no stretch to say that a film is being planned...the question is, at what point in planning is it at? I've heard they've been in some sort of pre-pre-production for a while...basically taking their time, as there's no rush (yay stage success!). They still want, and are planning, to do it. It's going to be a few years, maybe 4, before it sees release.
I really do hope they take their time with it and don't...well, don't **** it up. They should definitely look to the book for some inspiration and some tonal direction to help bring the musical from stage to screen. I did hear that they were going that route, at least at this point. I think Wicked could make an excellent film, but of course...it needs to be in the right hands, especially in terms of producers and directors. Chris Columbus is not allowed near this property.

I wasn't a huge fan of Rent when I saw it on stage. However, I thought it could work very well on film. I quickly changed my mind when I saw the film. While it wasn't the worst film adaptation of a musical I've ever seen, it and The Producers were the worst out of the recent movie musicals that have been released. I think Chris Columbus was one of the key reasons it didn't work well on film.

If this does come into fruition I'm crossing my fingers for 3 major things.
1. They use more events from the book to make it more politically charged and darker.
2. They use a new cast (a la Hairspray) for the school aged roles. I'd be fine if they used previous performers for the adults.
3. That Julia gets to play adult Elphaba. By the time filming roles around she'll be old enough to play a crony, dark Elphaba toward the end of her life and I think her look would really translate well on screen.

I like your 1 and 3 lol. (I don't know much about 2...)
I believe they should make a more bookbased movie...deffinatly...I think the book is better than the musical, but it might not translate on screen if it's made poorly.
