Okay, so if I am completely wrong about this, then I'll feel really really really stupid and retarded. So during I'm Not That Girl it starts to rain. Elphaba clearly gets wet, but doesn't melt. Madame Morrible comes in and stops the rain but sees that Elphaba got wet and is still living. So why would Madame Morrible believe Elphaba died from a melting? I think I've got something here, but I'm probably wrong. lol, that's usually what happens. lol. Okay, I'm gonna stop talking now.

Other than the obvious plot reasons?
I doubt Madam Morrible really remembers this incident. Besides, no one is thinking very clearly when they hear that Elphaba has been melted. I mean, surely Glinda and a few other people would have seen her get wet in some way, shape, or form, and they believe that she's dead, too.

Yea, why would Morrible tell Elphaba that she musn't get wet? She wouldn't know of Elphaba's skin condition (meaning the rain burning her skin). But then again, this musical is based off of Gregory's book. In the book she hates and is afraid of water. That explains why she runs under the bridge when it starts to rain. Just a thought.

the whole play is foreshadowing.
From fiyero singing about being brainless, and the lines in dancing through life, to elphaba not melting and the wizard and i song, specifically 'a celebration throughout oz that's all to do with me', hence no one mourns the wicked. well these are obvious, but the whole play is foreshadowing.

I thought Elphaba was standing under the bridge. .............???
And it would make sense for Morrible to make sure Elphaba doesn't get wet. Would mess up her hair, maybe ruin her clothes, she could catch a cold.......blah blah I never thought about this before.

Jan 23 2006, 10:34 PM
no. My point was that Madame Morrible, having seen Elphaba being rained on, would know that water does nothing to Elphaba. So when Elphaba was "melted", Madame Morrible would have known she was still alive. But as someone else said, why would she just so happen to remember that one day when Elphaba was in the rain? I dunno, just kinda thought it was funny.

Morrible is the Press Secretary though. She is the one who spreads the rumors about Elphaba being able to melt from water. Which would explain that she remembers the bridge situation and therefore turns the tables around.

she was under the bridge, stuck her head out, went back under the bridge, walked into the center of the stage. met up w/ morbs, morbs holds the umbrella over her head, elphaba goes to hug morbs and morbs says 'careful, you musn't get wet'. and depending on who you saw as elphaba, they each had a different reaction. Every one of them however then covered themselves w/ the umbrella until morbs did the 'weather' spell.

How did they react? Just curious, I obviously wasn't paying that much attention, and didn't pick up on the whole "you don't want to get wet" part. I just figured she was looking out for her wellbeing, you know?
But now that you all mention it, I like the thought that the writers wanted you to know that she wouldn't really melt. Although, I would kind of hope that newbies watching DIDN'T catch on to the forshadowing... For me, when I watched Elphaba melt, I was like sobbing; and then when Fyero knocked on the floor and said "it worked" and she popped out, I was SO HAPPY!!! I really thought she had died lol So, it was really nice to be in the dark and then find out like that.
I hope all of that made sense lol.

I thought she ran under the bridge to hide herself from Fiyero & Galinda. It didn't start raining after she went under the bridge cause F&G were doing their thing & it started to thunder & rain so Galinda puts out her umbrella and they run off.....but not forgetting Fiyero pausing:)
But I do understand what you are saying though.

I think the original question was how Madame Morrible knew that she shouldn't get wet (after I'm Not That Girl), which still hasn't been answered. (Unless I haven't read closely enough)

Hmm, the way I saw it was that Morrible kind of says it in a way that means she's trying to show Elphaba that she is "caring" and whatnot (given that she already knows at this point that she will be using/betraying Elphaba to get closer to The Wizard). The main point of the line, though, is that it is a throwaway to foreshadow the ending (the audience that doesn't know, just thinks it's a throwaway funny play on 'melt', though it really shows that water doesn't really melt her.)
Another clue that she can't really melt is that part in TG when one of the Ozians says "I hear her soul is so unclean/pure water can melt her" and the crowd sort of takes off on this. (This perhaps is to show why this is believed? I could see Morrible running with this idea.) Fiyero responds (and Glinda sort of agrees) that this is ridiculous. To me, this moment is most important b/c Fiyero remembers it later when he plays to the rumor by telling the guards to go fetch some water to distract them. And then obviously pretends this method really works to kill her with the plan. (Elphie positions the bucket of water, too.)
I guess the main point is why Morrible, the Wizard, and especially Glinda think Elphaba actually died. My guess is that for Morrible and the Wizard, it is just buying into the rumor and since they don't have any reason to believe she escaped, they don't doubt she is dead. I think Glinda just assumes she is dead after saying goodbye to her and then not hearing any word otherwise.
:ha: Does that make any sense or am I just completely off?

But is it ever established before that point that Elphie can be melted by water. The only point where melting is mentioned is in "The Wizard and I" where she sings the line about being so happy she could melt. But I don't think melting is mentioned again before the scene with Madame Morrible.
I've just always considered the line a throwaway line as sort of an in joke for the audience.
The one thing I've always thought is, during the opening number of act two, one of the crowd repeats the rumor "I heard her soul is so unclean, pure water can melt her".
Elphie knew friendship, love and caring, even till the end. Her soul was never unclean. You would think that, one day, that would get on Glinda's mind.

I can be really dence, I saw Wicked in Sept. and it didn't hit me untill a month ago that hey Elphaba isn't allergic to water lol. Remember she offeres to get the goat a glass of water without hesitation and she lives after she gets drenched with water. I believe that if Wicked would have went on Glinda would have gotten a clue once the shock wore off and went looking for her friend.

No, she jumps under the bridge right before it starts raining. When she sees Galinda and Fiyero. She ducks under the bridge to keep him from seeing her, then kind of peeks out. Then, it starts raining as F&G run across the bridge so Galinda pulls out her umbrella and they leave.
*** at least this was how it went the last few times I saw the show. The first couple times, I wasn't clear if she was under the bridge b/c of the rain or Fiyero. But the last time I saw Ana do it, she made it really obvious she was hiding from Fiyero and Galinda, though others may play it differently.

I have a theory. It's hard putting into words how I feel, but I'll try.
First of all, Elphaba has a very unique soul because she is from both worlds. Before she met Galinda, her soul was unclean. Not because she was evil, but because she was so depressed. So her soul was never really used. It hadn't experienced anything, so if it got touched by water than she would melt. She could have asked Dr. Dillamond if she wanted to get him water because she wasn't planning on touching it, she was planning on touching the glass that is holding the water. She probably had to do that before for one reason or another. After she becomes friends with Galinda, her soul is clean, because she finally has a friend and has experienced different things. For the I'm Not That Girl scene, she might go under the bridge because she simply doesn't want to get wet, same with Madame Morrible saying you musnt get wet, one of those motherly things. After she really does become "wicked" her soul is unclean, because she is evil. Although inside she still does have that kind heart, she trys to throw that away and forget about evertything. Water could melt her then. After For Good, she lets everything out, and lets that kind heart finally emerge again. So, her soul becomes clean again, making water not melt her.

I’m thinking the foreshadowing thing makes more sense….but….it could also be just a joke for the audience and something someone would say if you were in the rain without a umbrella….
Melting….
Maybe it’s a lot of water not just little sprinkles of water…..I mean it wasn’t raining that hard. She was in the rain for like 5 seconds and maybe got a couple sprinkles. And as we all know Dorothy threw a bucket of water, not sprinkles of water, a bucket of water on Elphaba.
And maybe she did melt! I mean if she can turn Fiyero into a scarecrow and make a broom fly, I’m sure she can make herself melt…..You know going with the whole rumor thing. Therefore, leading Madame Morrible to believe she was dead....

Many of the times I've seen the show, Elphaba runs under the bridge and stays there until Madame Morrible brings the umbrella.... However, I remember that during Kristin and Norbert's last show, Idina purposely walked out from under the bridge like it was no big deal (I thought it was funny).

Yes, but Elphie's soul was never unpure. Even in her darkest moment, which I classify as the point right before "For Good" in the castle. Even at that moment, she knew love for Fiyero and for the animals.
