am going to see the ny show in may and the tour in june and ive been watching alot of videos and everybody always claps when she starts to fly. i was woundering dose these ruin the moment
NannerboBanner
No, I don't think it does, but the people don't ALWAYS clap either.
Yeroismyhero
I cheered I think.. or was I too busy singing... hmmm
pseudomaunt
When I saw the OTC in Houston, everyone went CRAZY! It all depends on how the audience is feeling that night and--hate to say it--how well the actor does. Steph was tearing that song to shreds and eating it for dinner, so of course we all went wild for her!
Yeroismyhero
And the applause was deafening when the curtain came down for the intermission
I find it ruins the moment when people don't clap.... I always get goose bumps when she flies, but I practically fly out of my chair when everybody claps- it gives you such a rush
Nessarose
No one claped either time i saw it.
Yeroismyhero
They clapped at the end when the lights went out lol .... but yeah not during
I think people would have gotten pissed cuz they wouldn';t be able to hear
thanks everyone ill be sure to clap when i see the show
Yeroismyhero
Yeah... everyone claps after each song
shibby
no one really clapped in TO when i saw it...which i think is weird...it's totally a clap moment, i mean someone is "flying" right in front of you, you gotta clap!!!!

when i see it in boston i plan on going crazy and everyone around me will probably hate me but oh well, elphie deserves clapping there. plus i'm sitting by myself cause there was only singles left so those around me will be strangers and what do i care if strangers hate me
cinderella
I end up sat alone a lot (I don't smell or anything) and I still go wild or cheer and give a standing ovation when I want, it usually just spurrs people on to join me!

I'll always be the first in Rock you to do the Ga Ga hand claps

Theatre geeks rock...*ahem*

Oh and when I saw it in November, no one clapped either time I saw it. People made all sorts of exclamations though, like 'wow' and 'omgosh' and 'that is so cool' and so on.. Was pretty special.

does it really suck to sit alone...i'm kinda dreading it cause i'll want to discuss stuff and there'll be no one around me
cinderella
See i'm probably the opposite, I like to be alone so I can completely focus on what I want to, and then in the intermission i'll call someone to discuss bits if I have to. Then i'll come home and get onto message boards and go into every minute detail of the show in a review.

I was really scared about sitting alone at first, but you soon realise there are only so many times you can drag people round the musicals before they refuse to answer the phone to you! You've just got to remember to have no shame. If you want to cheer, then do so! Chances are you won't see those people again so just go for it!
Nessaxrose
I think its such a powerful moment and they expressions vary for differant people. If you had no clue that this was going to happen you might just sit there in awe but for Wicked vets you will probably go crazy.
elven_ringbearer
I know I'll clap at the "IT'S MEEEEEEE" part, because it is not like you're missing anything. I'll be moved to tears, I know.

So will I...its so powerful and inspirational.
I'm planning to have my butt up out of my seat, if I think I won't be blocking anyone's view, must be considerate, but maybe everyone else will get the idea. Is it proper to clap when the principals make their entrances?? I'm going in Seattle and I swear if everyone just sits there quietly, I'm going to be really irritated.

Hah, I think I may have trouble staying down too.
When I saw the show back in December '04, Idina got applause when she "Defied Gravity"! But hoqw can you not clap?
Rainbowgirl
Poop, that was my post about getting up and stuff. Forgot to sign in so didn't get credit for that post or the green backs. Poop, I say.

Anyway, my boyfriend and I decided Wicked is pretty much like a rock concert for us so at least I won't be alone in my enthusiasm.

Yeah its hard not to react in a non-celebrating way.

On Broadway, the times I saw it, the principals got entrance applause. When I saw the tour, I've only seen Elphabas get entrance applause: Maria got it when I saw her as Elphaba, Stephanie got it two out of the three times I saw her, and once was only because my friend and I started clapping. And Carole Shelley didn't get ANY - on tour. Even though I tried one day. tongue.gif
Nessarose
No one clapped for Jenna or Sho on there entrances when i saw it. I screamed after pretty much all the Elphaba songs and at the Curtain call i screamed louder than anyone when Michelle bowed.
eponine
I saw it in Chicago & I thought that everyone would clap for the principals as well. Glinda came out & nothing. Elphaba came out & got a great response. It's funny though cause you can tell the hardcore fans from the rest due to their giddyness in their applause & woo-ing! And yes, they did appaud when she defied gravity. I think it just makes it more exciting knowing that everyone else is feeling that rush as well.

I was a bit bummed about going by myself as well, but it turned out that I was so happy that I was finally seeing it that it didn't matter. Is it weird I choked up when I saw the dragon move?
Candleshoe07
We started most of the entrance applauses for all the leads while the show was on tour in St. Louis. It was sort of a "wave effect" of everyone else joining in...

same for Tampa. Carole got scant applause (mine was one) and that surprised me. People need to read the program more to see who the different players are.
Juggle~Wiggle
For some of the audiences I’ve been in, people didn’t usually start clapping until she’s all the way in the air during defying gravity. And then sometimes people clap right when her feet leave the floor, so I guess it depends on the audience.

Most of the time when all the leads came out everyone usually got an entrance applause. But I remember this one time Sho came out and no one clapped, so I started clapping then other people joined in.
Wicked Witch
No one clapped when I saw Wicked all three times...there was this silent awe...then a ginormous explosion of applause at the end of the song!
wickedfreak17
it annoys me when people clap when elphaba starts rising. i want to yell "I'M TRYING TO LISTEN AND WATCH HERE!!!" but that would be mean. so i supress it, lol.
AdmiralShark
In Tampa, after Maria had done DG and the lights went out, there was a buzz to the audience (beside the big roar) that was just so amazing to feel. Like they had just seen something special and they were in awe.

If there is one thing that I will always remember from the first time I saw Wicked live, it was that buzz.
WICKEDlover159
I didn't clap...I went numb, lol...I seriously think I lost all sense of feeling...

happened to me every single time... what a great feeling
Candleshoe07
I'm seeing the show in Chicago and I am definately making it my duty to start the entrance applause for all the principle roles! I just love making that wave effect and I'm sure it make the actors and actreses feel good!
bobert5353
I literally stated shaking. The DG clip I made, the screen starts shaking b/c yeah...lol!
wickedfreak17
yeah. when i saw wicked the first time when the tour was in chicago and i saw maria i when the song was over my mom said i didn't move, talk, or really breathe for a couple minutes i was just staring at the stage. i don't remember it, lol. but the last 3 times i saw it i have just felt light headed like that feeling you get when you've something you can't believe has just happened. *thinks back* i can still see steph rise up then at he end when the lights hit her and she is "levitating"....I MISS WICKED!
logan_of_oz
I cried! I was sitting next to my voice teacher/ friend and we just looked at each other and started balling. haha. :ha:
wickedfreak17
am i the only person who doesn't cry during wicked? well i really don't cry at all. but my friend's dad who is a football couch started crying during for good. after the show i was like "you're such a {insert mean name here}!" he deserved it. he always made fun of me for being in musicals...and going out with his daughter. :ha:
DarkEyedBeauty1
I saw the tour in L.A. and people were freaking out! It was great. I was very surprised when I saw it in NY that people didn't clap or do anything when she defyed.
mc751n
it really depresses me when people don't clap when she defies gravity. its amazing all in all and people should react :mumble:
Yeroismyhero
Perhaps they don't because that would disturb the song and then people wouldn't be able to hear.

I know I would be pissed if I missed hearing some of the song because idiots were clapping before it was over :argue:
Green.bubbles
I went to the Gershwin 4 times to see it - and throughout the first 3 times, everyone went crazy! Then I went to see it on a Thursday night and when Megan and Sho came out, there wasn't really a response - so I think a lot of it does depend on the audience and if there are hardcore fans around
MEEEEE
The people that know what's going on, like they've heard the soundtrack or seen a bootleg or whatever, do. I always try to start the clap right when she starts to rise...
WickedElphie28
I've been there when they've clapped and when they haven't...it really is up to the audience. I don't think they have to clap - because it is such a powerful moment in the show, a lot of people are just so wowed by the moment that they don't know how to react.
But when Elphaba comes running out on stage in the beginning? They have always clapped. Not so much for the other characters (except for Ben Vereen, because, well...he's Ben Vereen, so people clap for him...) But when I was at the January 8th show, everyone clapped for all of the principals, which was really cool. They deserve it!

I agree with whoever said that it depends on the actor/actress. If you enjoy who is playing the part and they do a really big number and they are still kicking butt you should tell them. I remember that I clapped when I saw Shoshana just because I was pretty much still in awe that I was even there (long story). After the curtain closed after Defying Gravity, there was like a 10 second silence and then the place errupted! It was amazing!!! I remember it like it was yesterday...
chaser500
It depends sometimes they clap....sometimes they don't. Sometimes they clap on it's meee or when she is fully in the air....sometimes their is a crazy Wicked-head who tries to start a clap but it doesn't work, etc.
defyit_17
I hate it when that happens! :?
covlatgj
when i saw it for the first time back in december i don't think i clapped, i was really trying to enjoy the whole experience, but most of the front row were wicked-heads and they were screaming like little girls when it happened. it was REALLY funny. i was glad to see that peolpe enjoy the show that much. it made me feel good.
defy___gravity
the first time i saw it in 09/04 with idina... no one knew about the effects of the flying so people were like hooping and hollaring when she started flying...

i mean.. i understand that its an amazing moment
but i got PISSED..
only cause they KEPT clapping throughout the whole "SO IF U CARE TO FIND ME LOOK TO THE WESTERN SKY.. AS SOMEONME..."

yeah couldnt hear ANY of that..
and especially with the music right before that
the dun dun dun dunddudndudjd DUDNDUDNDDJUDD

hahaha if that makes sense..

i dont know
that ruined it for me

i mean i was having chills still cause having listened to the soundtrack for so long and actually seeing it and experiencing it, i couldnt have fathomed it.. [i never looked at bootlegs or anything like that]

so yeah,
that time it ruined it for me only cause the clapping went on for too long
chaser500
YEAH I KNOW. I say clap on it's meee but stop right afte because newbies have not seen the show and therefore don't know whats coming!
