Ok...I haven't seen it live yet...but just based on the Youtube videos...anyways my topic is about the effect in its entirety. First the lift is a new interesting approach when you think about it...it kind of fits with the mechanical aspects of the show (i.e. the gadgets)...but sometimes I think they took the easy way out. I mean sometimes it seems to be so obvious how she is flying w/ the big giant drape in the back that appears to be hiding something. This was my original thought until I saw my favorite Defying Gravity video from 11.5.05. Ok I think its the best technical video u can watch. The lights look amazing as well as the fog....and when it is like that all you can see is half of Shoshana's body which is cool because she really looks like she's flying and you can't even see the drape. Another cool thing is...I'm going to try to explain in lamens terms...the lights cast like these shadows on Sho's costume and it appears to be like her cape is much longer as well as her dress. That might sound a little vague...but theirs really no other way to explain it. Watch that video and you'll know what I'm talking about.

i think it's by far the best effect in the show. i always thought of the drape as her cape. i never really thought it was "hiding" anything until i saw that steph vid in chicago (may we thank the lord for that  ).

I've figured out why we can always see the mechanics behind Stephanie- she NEVER throws the cape over it like she's supposed to, exposing her back support

they can't do everything perfect. i think the flying looks the best in the tour. everytime i've seen the show it's different. the drape flows in different ways and for some reason it looks like the lights are in a different place then they were the time before even though it was in the same city. when i saw the show in ny i CLEARLY saw shoshana run back into the lift and whip the cape around. i only saw it on the tour once.

Jan 27 2006, 03:59 AM
yeah, the tour's is better.... it goes into the air faster- which I like. I mean, if you were escaping people with pointy-sticks you wouldn't be flying slowly...
I just wish the people in the balcony couldn't see the pole-thingy behind Steph...

they don't do that on the tour...i don't think. i've never seen it atleast. on broadway they do. it makes so sense. she's saying how no one is ever gonna bring her down then she starts decending? crazy if you ask me.

I think they started doing it on Sho's first night, because everyone thought it was a glitch until they did it again, and again....
it looks really stupid- the tour definetly has been sets and effects
(except for the Wizard's head base that the Wizard and MM ride in on at the end- it looks wierd on the tour, the base is only like 2 inch thick)

not sure if what i have to say has anything to do with this topic but i think there is a picture in the 'Grimmerie' of the lift device, it more of an illustration than a real picture.

No idea why...but it looks cool...I think if you fly you would stay at the same height as if you were, hmm let's say, standing on an invisible platform hidden by a long false skirt. I think you might bounce up and down slightly.

It would be so cool to have the lift because then you could do pretty much the whole show becaue you could improvise the lift to fit Glinda's bubble. I want one!!

At the Gershwin they have special effects people under the stage controling certain aspects of the show. I'm pretty sure they control that and the bubble and the set pieces that move on and off the stage with out human help.

It's a puppet run by a peddle and some knobs and stuff.... i got to touch it! It has to be my favorie prop in the show....I love puppets..
They have it wired to a sound computer that sets off sound effects with certain movements....like when the mouth moves, you always hear a clang, and a click with the eyebrows... I love the head!

I think they should sell little Wicked playsets like the stage and dragon, and then you could buy backdrops or setpeices.

I saw a "Nutcracker" playset like that...it was so cool. The curtain would open and a song would play, and the sets would move...and the curtain would close again, and then, it'd open, and all the sets would be replaced with new ones...
It was like a $80 music box.

With a rising/falling chandelier or huge staircase with colorful masquerading dancers!
First of all, hydraulic lifts are not the easy way out- it would have been much cheaper to use a harness, which you would so obviously be able to see the ropes, and singing would be horrible. When I first saw the show I thought the effects were amazing, though I guess I was in rear mazzanine. Sho does a good job at hiding the support in the back. If you can come up with a better way for it to appear as if whoever is playing elphaba is flying, then you have reason to say that that was the easy way out. Otherwise, I think they did well with the lift.

i would play with a model of the wicked set all day long, like the phantom has his model of the opera house in the phantom of the opera movie. and i think for sure i would give my money to go up in the DG lift. it would be so amazing. if i had one i think i would manage to eat sleep and do my h/w in there cause i'm that cool.

I like the lift MUCH better on the tour, cuz the broadway is just sooooo slow. However, I think think DG needs to be green, not purple...Elphie is green, it's a green-power song. The purple's a cool idea, but I want green back.

And, with the green- she kinda blends in. Purple is the contrast to green so she really stands out among the background- Amazoing (my new word made up of a typo)
