Full Version: Funny Girl revival needed?

Am I the only person who thinks that a Funny Girl revival would be phenomenal? I honestly think that it desperately needs a Broadway revival - even if it were just an Encores! production.

I know that Stephanie J has said a number of times that she'd love to play Fanny again - and there's a brilliant, brilliant video of her doing a Funny Girl medley in one of her Birdland shows that's floating around on Youtube, and it is to die for. I also loveeee Julia Murney's rendition of People from the Funny Girl benefit performance.

Otherwise I'd be all for seeing Sutton Foster, or maybe even Kerry Butler, play Fanny ...

i would really really like one. would i be able to see it? probably not, but i still think it's needed. and if stephanie were to play fanny...i might have to die, and then figure out how to get to new york.
Popular_Galinda
I really think Stephanie would pull a Tanya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan thing if she didn't get the role, if a revival was made. Haha.

(I'm not saying that to badmouth Steph, dear gd, I'm joking around...sort of. Hehe chuckle.gif )

I really think my gram would take me to see this show, because she is in love with this show. I still remember from when I was little her singing to me "Katie, Katie, married lady..." (She knows the actual name, but mine is Kaitlin, so she put mine in there.)

Stephanie has to be Fannie Brice in Funny Girl ASAP! I love that musical and it DESPERATELY needs a revival...

All the Blockheads have been saying this for ages. =P

My voice teacher's BF is a producer....hmmm.....=P jk, I think that'd be a bit too much of a project for him - he's still really early in his career.

But I really, really, really (really, really, really) hope that there is a revival. I know that there would be a mad rush by like 90% of the women on Broadway to get that job. lol

Haha, I just had this horrid thought of the possibility of there being yet another 'You're the One That I Want' reality show with a Funny Girl revival, with Barbra as a judge. Ha. More realistically, I'm thinking that, if there were a revival though, it might have its genesis as an Encores! production ... Like Gypsy or Chicago, etc. - or maybe even at Paper Mill.

The performance of Stephanie's that I have seen is simply remarkable. If there was a revival, I think she'd definitely NEEDto be Fanny. Either Steph, or Julia.

HAHA!!! That was brilliant.

But seriously though, Julia or Stephanie...my soul would be so happy.
Idina*and*I
So the Elphabas must have a thing for Funny Girl. Idina, Stephanie, Shoshana, and Julia. How about they rotate?
DearOldShiz
Shoshana Bean! She said it would be one of the only things that would get her back to Broadway.

Dawn
O/T, but Conor, I'm in love with your avatar. FTW.

Julia or Stephanie would be my top choices if we're talking Wicked actresses here - or maybe just overall, actually. I haven't really had time to think about it, but judging from the names suggested already, they'd be my top two.

Major bump for this as it looks like this might be happening the only question being who will play Fanny Brice? Some thought by Darren Criss & Kristin Chenoweth about Lea here.

As Broadway World has previously reported, Broadway producer Bob Boyett is endeavoring to revive FUNNY GIRL on Broadway with famed director Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, Awake and Sing, The Light in the Piazza) at the helm. The pair are currently planning a six week out-of-town tryout in late 2011 in preparation for a swift Broadway transfer later that season, according to the report. This would be the first revival of the show on Broadway.

I'll go out on a limb and make a prediction that this will be the first play in the 2011-2012 Ahmanson Season in L.A. I got a survey last week regarding plays they were considering asking my feelings regarding them and this was on the list. I ranked it #1 of all those they had listed that I wanted to see. Please let it happen!

Julia Murney is too old, SJB isn't a good enough actress, Leslie Kritzer same, Kerry Butler just wrong - I can't think of a single star at the moment who's right for the part.

I second your sentiments about Lea Michele. Hopefully as reported elsewhere Bartlett Sher is not fond of her so it's unlikely she'll be cast.

I know someone who has the comedic chops and an excellent singing voice. May I suggest Nicole Parker although she's committed to The People in the Picture for awhile? Don't know how old she is so I guess that would factor into the selection. How old was Barbra when she played the role?

The show will run from January 15 - February 26, 2012 in Los Angeles.

She played the role in a regional production and won an award for it I think.

So glad I canceled my season subscription to the Ahmanson. I won't be seeing this if indeed this really does happen which I'm beginning to doubt that it will happen.

Lea Michele was in talks for the role of Fanny, but she could not do it due to her schedule with Glee.

I'm excited for this revival regardless, I love the show and think it's in good hands with Sher, but they seem to have done this back to front. I think this is the sort of show where you should START with having the star who could carry it off brilliantly and build them a revival rather than searching endlessly like this, though I do enjoy the speculation.

Ryan Murphy still wants Lea Michele to do it:

Lauren Ambrose is rumored to be the front-runner for the role of Fanny.

At last someone confirmed that Broadway World rumor. I hope it's true!

And before you say can she sing? Yes she can.

She has a band and has performed with them for years in cabaret settings.
Here she is delivering the goods in My Man

Check out this powerful rendition of a Fanny Brice era song Hey Brother Can You Spare A Dime?

She sang on "Six Feet Under" and although they're X-rated you can find them on that site that shall be unnamed.

And I'm loving her on "Torchwood: Miracle Day"!

If true I'll be online the day tickets go on sale at the Ahmanson to the public to buy seats.

It's official! Lauren Ambrose will play Fanny:

I am delighted by this news. She will be fresh, fun and completely different to Streisand. Excellent casting.

Can't wait to see her at the Ahmanson this winter dance.gif

Lea Michele does not seem upset at all about not being casted as Fanny. She's very happy for Lauren.

Bobby Cannavale is going to be Nicky Arnstein making his musical theater debut. I'm such a huge fan of his so this is really exciting! http://broadwayworld.com/article/Bobby-Can...Y-GIRL-20110913

OMG I'm gobsmacked whoa2.gif that the Funny Girl revival at the Ahmanson and on Broadway has been postponed. Just bought tickets this week for opening night and now I'll never get to use them icon_sad.gif

Nice Work if You Can Get it, the new musical that will star Matthew Broderick and Kelli O'Hara, will be playing at the Imperial Theatre instead:
