Quick translation rolleyes.gif (sorry it's so long; don't know how to do it otherwise):

This week saw the premiere of the Musical Wicked and in it our Willemijn from Maarn (explanation translator: Maarn is village in The Netherlands) is the lead.

Journalists appear in huge amounts in Germany for Willemijn Verkaik.

“So ...”

“There you are in Germany.”

“Yes, funny isn’t it.”

“The lead.”

“Yes, <laughs> indeed.”

In Stuttgart you cannot escape it, everywhere you look you see Willemijn from Maarn. Three years ago her German musical adventure started.

“I didn’t specifically want to go to Germany, but I just thought I will go and audition and see how far I get. And at a certain point I was in Koln and I liked it there so much and was offered so many opportunities ..”.

Willemijn played roles in ‘We will rock you’, ‘The Three Musketiers’ and ‘Elisabeth’, but now she has the first prize, the lead in the gigantic musical production Wicked.
But what about her German?

“She speaks German very well. She speaks better German than I.”

However, she doesn’t think German is always easy.

“For example, I have to sing “Bist Du schon glücklich, glücklich und stolz auf Dich. Vermutlich lohnt es sich zo schleimen und zu schliechern um Zielen zu erreichen.
And that …. Uch .. is rather difficult.

Wouldn’t it be better for a German to play this role?

“No, there is no German who can play this role as well as Willemijn.”

“OK. Thank you”

“Very good, Lucy.”

“Well that is ok, then, Willemijn.”

“ Yes, that’s ok.”

The success in Germany also has less pleasant sides.

“Especially now that I am in Stuttgart, which is about a six and a half hours drive from Maarn, I think, and yes, that is difficult now and again.
Here I have a very large envelope with a lot of pictures that I still have to hang on the walls. I always have to have them with me, because otherwise it will not go right obviously.”

“Will your parents be here on Thursday?”

“My parents will come, yes.”

“Where will they be seated?”

“I think they will be seated in row 6. And that is here. So that’s really good.”

“So there sit the public from Maarn.”

“Yes.”

Willemijn still has a very big dream:.playing a lead in The Netherlands.

“I would really like that. But that’s …, yeah, … I’m not the only one that dreams about it.
And I believe that people, eh, you know, that I know play in Germany, in Stuttgart, in such an incredibly large musical with such an enormously big role, I think I may be very proud of that. So, we will see what will happen.”

So for that you have to go to Germany ..

AWWW!!! She's such a sweet heartbeat.gif. There aren't a lot of people like her around anymore, wanting to do a good thing for her country. It makes her even better in my eyes. Thanks very much green_and_pink. It's a huge favor.

I wonder if she's going to be the Elphie for the Amsterdam production. Or if Stuttgart would be willing to let her go since she's so fabulous. laugh.gif

In this video of her and Lucy, I noticed that the host offered them coffee on cam. It's something that I don't usually see people doing on-cam, here in Asia or in any of the other talk shows that I see and I was wondering if it's something exclusive to this show or if it's something that they just do a lot on European talk shows in general. As you can see, I'm virtually ignorant of European culture, apart from what I know in US TV. Am I making sense? icon_redface.gif
green_and_pink
@LoyalFan: You're welcome! About the coffee: I think this was a morning/breakfast show (I'm not German so I'm not sure), but in my country they would possibly also give you a drink. As it's morning, coffee is most appropriate (or tea). They usually give water or even wine in some afternoon/evening shows, just as a friendly/hospitable gesture, especially when they are sitting at a table.
I really hope that when Wicked finally comes in The Netherlands (perhaps in Amsterdam, perhaps in another theater), Willemijn will play Elphaba. But although there are a lot of rumors, it is still not confirmed when Wicked will come. By the time it will, I think Willemijn will be dying to go home rolleyes.gif .
Elphahaba
She is amazing. When was this broadcasted in the Netherlands?

I think I would die if she would play Elphaba in the Netherlands (L)
green_and_pink
No idea. It was a local TV station. However, it was in the week of the opening night in Stuttgart (no idea when that was exactly).
She is indeed one of the best Elphabas I have heard. Wish I could hear her live.
loyalfan
And Lucy was sooo cute when she ran off after that second comment. heartbeat.gif And here I was thinking she'd said something totally embarrassing. That must've been shot just before they went on for the first time.
Kind of Wicked

German Wicked Cast at the Jose Carreras Charity Event.

They are not singing live, but that has nothing to do with them... a playback is easier during such a tv show and is wanted by the networks.

Unfortunatelly they did not use a playback where Willemijn's new riffs are included.
Liss
Ow, I loved it o_0

I hope that they will hurry in Holland with the production, this looks amazing!

i'm changed the title of this post so more tv show clips can be put on smile.gif
loyalfan
Can anybody please translate? Please?
Elphahaba
What do you want translated? The speaking part in the José Carreras Gala? smile.gif
loyalfan
Yes, please. And if possible the earlier clip that I posted heartbeat.gif. I know the earlier, longer clip's a bit of a job, so I didn't wanna impose, but I would really appreciate it if someone could translate that. I can only imagine what the two of them are saying to the show host. Those were gummi bears that she's offering there, right?

Athos
@loyalfan:
I tried a translation of the earlier clip (with the coffee...) I'm afraid it's not very good English, but I hope it helps you

---------------------------------------
At first the host offerst coffee and liquorice - she heard that they like liquorice.
It#s not usual in german talkshows to serve coffee, cake etc. but there are some show, where it fits in the concept, Breakfast TV for exemple or some afternoon shows like this one
-------------------------

Host: Today is „International Day of Mother-Language“. You are from Holland, so can you greet our viewers in your language

Wilelmijn: sure (in netherlands: Hello I’m Willemijn , I’m from the Netherlands, a heartly welcome, here I am)

Host: OK, I think this understood everybody here in germany too, that was quite well to understand.

Will: Yes, I think so, it’s quite resembling

Host: our theme today is „Witches“, maybe a littel bit the fairy witches. I thought to myself, somehow in every woman theres a little bit of a witch, isnt’t there?

Will/Lucy: yeah.. a little bit, yea

Host: Although we all look that nice and good, one is easily deceived

Will: Yes

Host: What witches do you play?. In fairytales it’s always about Good and Evil

Will : Yea, thats the thing to ask in our Musical. At the Beginning you think the green – I play the green witch, Elphaba, and at the beginning you think „Oh thats the evil one“ but then an few things happen, and you think „hmm, was she really that evil?“ Wasn’t that because she wanted to do good.

Host: and so you are the other Witch, that first decieves us with all the goodness

Lucy: yes , my role is in the beginning „everybodys darling“ and you think that there can be no evil in her. But then she is quite thoughtless, just because she doesn’t give thoughts at whats happening around her, and so it gets to some situations where you just wanna say „Girl – not so good“
So by time it gets clear, that not because one is different or because on is adored ... apperances are deceptive

Host: Glinda comes from a good house and is a bit spoiled

Lucy: Yes

Host: Is this a role you can identify or aren’t you at all like that

Lucy: Of course I’m glad, that I can wear so much beautiful costumes

Host: little bit like Barbie

Lucy: yes.that’s nice, but I won’t say, that I’m a princess, my family did see to that
But it’s a lot of fun, just to say some imprudences, that in real life you never would say, cos it’S to bold

Host: Elphaba is a fighter, a person who stands to that she is different. Is this accomodating?

Will: well I don’t have her experiences, to have to fight for who I wanna be, But I like saying my opinion and to me it’s important do stay who you are

Host: We listend earlier to „Somewhere over the rainbow“ with Judy Garland. I ordered it specially from the archive. Thats a film and a story al lot of people know. What can you tell of the story from the Witches of Oz

Willemijn: when you compare it to „The wizard from oz“, our green witch is of course the green witch from „The wizard of oz“ and we tell the pre-story, well at the End of Act 2 it comes together

Lucy: you see , or maybe we try to show how the green witche’s way was. How she became who she is in the film.

Will : In the movie she only was evil and only did evil things, and the musical shows why.

... host... bla bla bla

Host “How do you feel with the green make-up?“

Will : On stage I don’t feel it at all. Sometimes when I look in a mirror that’S like „oh.. yes.. right.. I’m green“ I don’t feel it, ist just like normal make-up

Host: what was is like the first time? Or what happens when you’re sweating, is it going off?

Will: Both sides of the stage are Make up artists who fresh it up, and when I sweat really much, they have a hard job to do, but it’s quite good resisting.

Feel free to correct or to laugh laugh.gif
loyalfan
Laugh? No way!! Thanks a whole lot for your efforts bow.gif . Now I have at least an idea of what they were saying. Now I know what Lucy was saying when she used the phrase "everybody's darling" because honestly those were the only words I understood!! laugh.gif Everybody always asks about the green makeup.

So they were guesting because it was the International Day of Mother-Language or was that just a coincidence? I almost felt sorry for them in the latter parts of the show because of all the phone-in questions. tongue.gif
Athos
no, that thing with the"Mother language day" was coincidence. She just wanted Willemijn to say something in netherlands (as they often do) an so she mentioned it.
She mentioned that the theme of the show was "Witches" so I think they were invited cos of that.

Yea, the phone calls were annoying and the callers weren't the brightest. So mcuh help and he didn't know the answer "Dirty Dancing"
loyalfan
The new Jose Carreras performance is out!!! They finally uploaded the full clip on the Stage.de website. Can anybody tell me what the hexen (was that right?) were saying while they were handing over the check? As you probably already know, I don't speak a word of German and need a little help.
FixatedOnVerdigris
I love you all for the translations smile.gif My german isn't good enough to translate yet, haha
