Annaleigh Ashford: Changed My Life For The Better.: May 11th, 2008
I got to the theater after fighting the subway system for what seemed like forever, I ran down every block to make it on time and be there to take my spot [for Act One atleast] in the Orchestra. I ran up to the box office and got the ticket that blockhead24 had left for me. Ran up and took my seat. I could hear the cast giving Annaleigh love from behind the curtain and could hear her talking to them from the rafters. Soon after, the lights lowered and I felt my heart skip a beat: I was there, I was going to see Annaleigh's final show. I'd be there and when people would talk of it, I could say I saw her on the last day, and it made me smile and yet I could feel the tears welling up in me. The curtain rose and my life changed.
One Mourns The Wicked: Annaleigh's entrance was met with thunderous applause and cheers from all over. She has an incredible upper register and was so wonderful in her mannerisms and ways of doing things. I think the ensemble kissed and greeted her a bit more than usual due to it being her last performance, but I could be wrong. The ensemble was strong and wonderful, but the moment belonged to Annaleigh.
Dear Old Shiz: Stephanie made her entrance and she got a great amount of applause. Annaleigh entered and looked so beautiful in the white outfit. She did some hilarious things like kicking her leg. Also, I must add how Ben Liebert is the best Boq I have seen since Rob Sapp and Christopher Fitzgerald. He nailed the nerdy element with the sweetness unlike Jeffery Kuhn and others.
The Wizard and I: Stephanie was incredible. My first ever time seeing her, she has such a powerful voice that it literally shook me with it's power. She is the best Elphaba I have seen in a very long time, miles and bounds better than Victoria Matlock and taking Eden Espinosa's spot in my top three of favorite Elphaba's and nipping at Shoshana. Her acting was fantastic and fierce.
What Is This Feeling: Stephanie and Annaleigh have the best chemistry of a Elphaba/G[a]linda I have seen since Megan and Eden back in 2006 and even Shoshana/Megan back in 05. They worked off each other and Stephanie played off of Annaleigh's leg kick and voice in such a hysterical way. The two of them were just incredibly humorous and you could tell they generally enjoy themselves playing off one another.
Something Bad: Pretty good. Stephanie and Steve Skybell were wonderful.
Dancing Through Life: David Burnham was so good as Fiyero. His voice was fantastic and he and Annaleigh were so damn sexy together. He did the funniest hair toss I've seen in long time. Ben yet again was nerdy and adorable as Boq and Cristy Candler was a very good Nessarose. Annaleigh and her random hysterical way was just too funny. She did the most interesting Elphie-dance cut in I have ever seen. So hysterical. She churned the butter and was just too funny.
Popular: Omigod, you guys! Stephanie and Annaleigh were HYSTERICAL. Annaleigh and Stephanie did this hysterical leg bouncing thing which I cannot even begin to describe to you how hysterical it was. Then Annaleigh's hair toss, she would say "Toss Toss" then back up and make an innocent face and say "Oh no." and Stephanie did it and they both kept cracking up. Annaleigh bent backward and did the funniest thing when she spoke of changing Elphaba's life. It was probably the funniest damn Popular I have ever seen. Annaleigh's voice was fantastic and she was just too amazing for words.
Cub Scene//I'm Not That Girl: David and Stephanie have some sexy chemistry and they worked so well off each other. And Stephanie doing the toss, toss was hysterical. Stephanie preceded her amazing chemistry with David to deliever one of the most amazing rendetions of I'm Not That Girl that I have ever heard. Her voice was soft and truly touching. She truly is an incrediblely talented woman who made me extremely happy to be able to see her on such a special day where you knew she'd bring her A-game.
One Short Day//Sentimental Man: Annaleigh and Stephanie yet again have the best chemistry: They were doing this hysterical random dance during the Wiz-O-Mania section of the song. The two of them made the funniest face during the picture taking section and when they were singing about being best friends, you could tell it was getting to them, but they were just fabulous. Lenny Wolpe is probably my second favorite Wizard ever behind Ben Veeren, he was truly fantastic and I loved his voice and I want to just say that Miriam Margolyes is my favorite Morrible simply for the face she makes during the line "When you do something for the Wizard..". So funny.
Defying Gravity: Stephanie was ON FIRE. The song was incredible. She nailed it and was truly just amazing. I love the change of how the cape no longer gets a laugh with the simple drumroll. Annaleigh and Stephanie broke my heart during the "I hope your happy.." section and they seemed generally sad for obvious reasons. Seeing Stephanie fly so close up was incredible and it just was one of those moments, I'll never forget till I die.
At intermission I switched with blockhead24 and moved to the rear mezzanine: I could see the entire set and used blockhead's binoculars for close ups and such. I didnt mind due to the fact I got to see close up all of my favorite moments of the show, except for the witch-fight and Thank Goodness.
Thank Goodness: Annaleigh was truly heartbreaking. I began to cry as she was singing the verses about Elphaba because she looked so sad and near tears that it truly broke my heart. Her voice was incredible and her change from Galinda to Glinda was very good: She kept her perkyness but was much more serious and royal in a way.
Wicked Witch of The East: Cristy was fantastic and her voice was wonderful. Stephanie was truly touching as she was speaking to Cristy and Ben was truly wonderful and truly broke my heart. He has such a pretty voice. Probably one of the best WWOE I have ever heard.
Wonderful:Lenny Wolpe is amazing, his voice is so rich and full. I missed the Wonderful dance break so much just because he was such a fantastic dancer in Drowsy Chaperone and I wished I could have watched him and Stephanie dancing across the stage. I miss the dancing.
As Long As Your Mine: Yet again, David and Stephanie were sexy and had great chemistry. Their voices blended and they were just so goregous together. The new chorography works so well and is much less awkard and more sexy than the original. Stephanine's delivery of the "For the first time I feel... wicked." line was perfect.
The Witch-Fight: Stephanie and Annaleigh truly went at it during this. I loved how Stephanine mocked Annaleigh's voice and mannerism once more and her delievery of the "come and go by bubble.." line and mini speech was wonderful. I love Annaleigh's "yes, I do." when she slapped Stephanie across the face. She also had a great delievery of the "things that don't belong to us." line as well. Just loved it. The wand-broom twirling was fantastic.
No Good Deed: Stephanie IS firece. Incredible vocals and truly moving and firece. Loved it, loved it, Loved it. I truly now feel I am becoming a blockhead.
For Good//Finale:Skipping over March of The Witch Hunters, which was very good. But, For Good was so heartbreaking. Annaleigh and Stephanie were not simply Glinda and Elphaba in that moment, but Annaleigh and Stephanie saying goodbye. The two of them were crying and simply broke my heart and left me a mess. I cried through the entire song and I mean, I sobbed. It tore me apart. Truly one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever witnessed onstage. Annaleigh began to cry as she was holding the hat after the melting scene and it was so hard to watch. Once more, I bawled my eyes out. Annaleigh held together during the finale, but I kept the binoculars on her while she sat in the bubble and I could see she was so sad and penesive the entire time.
The curtain came down and the audience thunderously applauded. As the cast bowed then Annaleigh and Stephanie came out and bowed and hugged and began to cry. Stephanie gave this speech [All this is courtesty of legally_popular on BWW, who tried and may have missed somethings]:
“Thank you so much. If I can just have a couple more moments of your time, and please bear with me because it’s gonna be hard to find the words. Today we say goodbye to an amazing performer and dear, dear friend to all of us. We’re not… The Wicked family is not saying goodbye, but the Broadway company is. Annaleigh is going off to lead the company in Chicago. They’re ending their run and she gets to send them off with a bang for their last three months. They’ve entrusted that in her faithful hands. And she’s a little one… she’s like one of the youngest leading ladies on Broadway, and I can’t tell you what an amazing presence…(?)….her professionalism…her endurance – you can’t believe she ever hardly misses a show, she’s a monster  honestly. ...(?)…. :looks at Annaleigh: You are the most beautiful light I have ever met. And it’s constant. And it’s just positivity that touches every single person you’ve ever met and I wish there were more people in the world like you (Steph is choking up and in tears by now, as is Annaleigh). And I’m going to miss you and everyone’s gonna miss you so much!”:audience cheers/applause: Then Steph turns to the audience and is like, “So get up off your feet and…” :audience is so loud: They then blew kisses and bowed and Annaleigh lifted her dress and flashed the audience.
I bawled and bawled through the entire thing and was sobbing all the way to the stage door where I met up with blockhead24 and DefyingGravity77 [of BroadwayWorld] and we waited for Annaleigh. David, Miriam, Ben, Cristy, Lenny and Noah Rivera all commented on our shirts and asked if Annaleigh had seen them, which they all said she'd love 'it. I waited and feared I'd burst into tears once she exited the stage door, but held together well. Annaleigh exited the stage door and began down the line. When she got to us in our shirts, she laughed and said how amazing it was. Blockhead went to give the shirt to her, which I basically grabbed and showed off to her and she was so happy. I asked for a "mad props" picture and then one of Annaleigh's friends snapped a picture of me and her while she was holding her shirt. She hugged me and told me how much it meant to her. I was so happy to have been there as a Fannaleigh.
I walked all the way to the train station and sat on the train and felt I had witnessed one of the most amazing days in Wicked history. Annaleigh Ashford has truly changed my life and her performance will never ever leave me. She is my favorite Glinda ever and always will be.
