Obviously we all love the songs in Wicked.
But does anyone have any favorite parts of the orchestra's underscoring during other scenes?
I get chills at the For Good theme that plays right after Elphaba's melting when Glinda finds the hat and starts to cry. I get teary-eyed every single time. It's actually my favorite part, musically speaking, of the entire show.
I hope I'm not the only one. Then again, maybe it's just the music major in me. :sing:

Oh, this is such a beautiful topic!
I love how Schwartz used the music of ALAYM as a "theme" throughout the entire musical. Many people have commented on this but I didn't notice the continuity until I actually saw the show. I'm not quite sure what you'd call that, though... I want to say "leitmotif" but that could be wrong.
Mmm... favorite parts, though, let's see. This isn't really something you can hear on the OBCR, but I loved the omnipresence of the clarinet in the orchestration, especially during scenes with dialogue. I'm a clarinetist so I'm always eager to pick it out, and there was a lot of clarinet for me to hear!

Wow, I never new that the orchestration was that full... Well, that's just one more example of how incredibly complex and detailed this show is.
And I would kill to play flute in the show...or even better: CONDUCT the orch.

Oh, but I want to point out Stephan had nothing to do with the orchestration of Wicked (well he had some input, but didn't actually write the score). That was somone else entirely, Stephan just came up with the melody and lyrics.. the orchestrator (Bill Brohn) is who really makes the music come alive.. no offense to Stephan
I love Bill Brohn with a passion

Yeah, a lot of people have no idea how many collaborators are needed for just ONE musical! There's the lyricist, the composer, the librettist, the orchestrator, and that's just for
writing the darn thing. Musicals are really a collaborative effort, something that just one or even two people can't do.
Right now I'm writing a musical, and although I'd bore you if I told you all the details, I will say that I'm writing the book and the lyrics and that my friend is composing. However, he can only play piano so, when the time comes, we'll have to get someone else to do the orchestrations! I do not envy the person we choose for that task, because we've got some CRAZY ideas as far as orchestration is concerned.
So yeah, I have MAJOR love for Bill Brohn, too!
