For Oz sake, Wicked opened in San Francisco over FIVE years ago and yet it is still labeled "A New Musical" all over... I guess it's just a huge pet-peeve of mine.

I know what you mean. Something ceases to be new when it's half a decade old.
kdowicked
i just think its what's your definition of new is.
elphabala
ive been wondering about that too. but i guess it depends on what you compare it to. if you compare it to a show like phantom then heck yeah its a new musical.
dodgerphreak
My definition of a new musical would be one such as The Little Mermaid, not Wicked.
kdowicked
but the little mermaid has been a musical like movie for a LONG time. hahaha i dont consider that really new. lol. wicked isnt really new. unless people have just discovered it.
eponine101
All the posters over here say "The Broadway Musical". smile.gif
Broadway
I really don't get it either, but I'm beginning to think it's just a part of its title...although I agree, it's been five years. A "new musical" would be something like In The Heights. But whatever.
DearOldShiz
It's referred to as "The Broadway Musical" in both Australia and Japan and "Die Hexen von Oz" (The witches of oz) in Stuttgart.

I heard somewhere that the reason "new" is in it's title is because it's not a revival. But I could be wrong.
DefyingGravity1991
in NYC the posters say a "new musical" maybe its just a NYC thing seeing thats its original home?.... in my oppinion Wicked isnt really new, TLM is.
Fiyero3305
I don't know about the posters but "A New Musical" has been removed from the souvenir programs, and has been for over a year now.
helen_dallimore_forever
well in london they still use "a New musical on some of the posters around london but the newest 6 foot poster i have obtained has it removed and insted of WICKED being in silver it is white!!!

Please...there are many other things in the world that need fixing, and this isn't one of them. Just move on and don't worry about it. The producers ARE smart people wink.gif ...

Ohh well that would certainly make sense. I vote for this reason.
nowTHATwe'reFRIENDS
that does make the most sense. but do they call every other musical out there that isnt a revival new musicals too??
Citizen of oz
I heard its called a new musical becuase Stephen Schwartz hasn't produced a new musical since, so it'll be called a new musical until another of his are on broadway. Might be completely wrong but I agree its not really a new musical anymore, especially since half the world has seen it!

If you're going to look at it like that, why even bother being a member of this board? There are more important things in this world than anything discussed here.
staticoranges
It isn't a revival or a stage adaptation, therefore it is a new musical.
