Ok, so today I FINALLY saw Wicked, and it was AWESOME. I had to keep reminding myself it was real, and that i was really seeing it. When we first got there, we bought Porgrams and checked the cast-list board, and saw that Amanda was out, with Jemma in, and Anthony Callea was out, with Ross Hannaford on as Boq. We weren't overly bothered about either. Anyway, we took our seats (Row BB, thrid row from the front, I was seat 26, almost centre). They were awesome seats, being so close. Spoilers throughut, for anyone who doesn't want to know.

NOMTW - It was a bit different than what I expected, but awesome all the same. I didn't know that there were monkeys at the start!!! Anway, the ensoble started and they were great. We could see them all so clearly, being so close. Lucy came down in her bubble, and she looks SO beautiful Glinda-fied. No applause for her, but I think everyone was just so amazed by the bubble. Her voice is BRILLIANT. I loved her. And some of the bubbles came out to us, which was great. Everyone was great in this scene, just wonderful. Huge appluse at the end of this.

DOS - Lucy was very cute in the bubble, and she was on time getting on stage after the quick change. Jemma got an appluse when she entered. Penny is gorgeus as Nessa. She looks so cute and innocent. Not much else to say here, but very nicely done.

WAI - Maggie is really good at the start, and then Jemma just blew everyone away. She was really, really good at this. No big riffs, she just sang the song, which was nice. I also noticed (and my friends agreed) that greenified, Jemma looks quite like Idina. She sounds nothing like her, but in looks, she does. Huge appluse again.

WITF - Lucy and Jemma have great chemistry here. Lucy's so cute as Galinda, and acts very spoiled, and very surprised that she hasn't got her way. The girls' voice's arn't overly different, but Jemma still does a great job of mocking Lucy. I loved the ensomble again in this, the choreo was great. I've never actually seen WITF, so that was good to actually see it. The "boo!" was good, but no evil cackle from Jemma.

SB - Lucy's "The artichoke is steemed" line got alot of laughs, and was very well done. Penny just sits at the back looking innocent. The actual "Something Bad" song was done nicely. Well done, but not much else to say about this.

DTL - Rob's entrance was good. They did the same thing as in London, where the cart thing nearly knocks Elphaba over. Ross's "You're touching me!" line was hilarious. Rob was actually quite awkawrd during alot of DLT, especially while Galinda's asking Boq to go with Nessa, Rob just sort of wanded around the background looking for something to do. Again, I loved the ensomble through-out the scene, the choreo is just brilliant, especially at the start with the books. Penny just sits towards the back, looking as though she desperatly wants to join the others, but just can't. The Nessa-Elphaba part was very sweet, Penny has a really young voice, and looked so excieted about going to the party. Lucy was great during the Hat part, both with ehr friends and Elphaba. It got lots og laughs. Boq and Nessa were really cute, and Boq looked so shattered when he saw Galinda and Fiyero kiss. Penny just looks cute the entire time. The Elphie dance was really awkward, and worked brilliantly. Jemma was really stiff and sharp with her movements, which was different, but it worked. And I loved all the fairy-lights for in the Oz-Dust Ballroom.

SS/Popular - This was GREAT!! Lucy was so funny throughout the entire song. She adds her own little bits to it. Jemma's very straight-faced throughout just about the whole song, until near the end when she's given the mirror. Lucy does some great skips and jumps during the song. She also lifted up Jemma's skirt at the start of Popular. Her "I remind them on their own behalf - to - think - of - celebrated..." part was THE BEST. She does these funny little pucker things in-between the words. It's hard to explain what she does, but it's the noise you make with your lips when you're rubbing lipstick on (sorry about eh bad expalination, but I dont know what else to call it!!!). Jemma's toss-tossing is very funny, she puts on a great high-pitched voice. The "Ballgowwwwwwwwn"'s were good, and the flower part was lovely. Huge appluse at the end of this.

Lion Cub/INTG - Rob was really good in this, and his mimicking Jemma mimicking Lucy was very funny. The scene was very nicely done. INTG was beautiful. Jemma sang it really well. Maggie was great coming back in, and the rest of the scene ran nicely.

Train Station/OSD - Lucy was very good at the Station, and seemed genuinly annoyed with the whole name change thing. Glinda, Elphaba and Fiyero were all very good with the 'thinking of big words' thing. It was very comic. The costume change for Lucy and Jemma seemed to be on time. It was all so Ozmopolitan!!! The Wizomania heads were very funny, and the scene seemed to run smothing. It was all so bright!!! Everyone was great. Very green. Wow.

SM - Very nice. Rob Guest is a great Wizard. The tone of this scene changes nicely. Jemma played Elphaba brilliantly in this scene, IMO. She was so devistated to see what she'd done.

DG - Wow. It was really, really good. Jemma dn Lucy were both outstanding. The broomstick wire was very visable too. Again, no big riffs from Jemma, but she sang it beautifully. The flying was amazing, and Jemma appeared to be floating. It's so much better live!!!!! It was really amazing. Huge appluse at the end.

TG - Really lovely. The ensomble was great again, and Lucy was brilliant. Her "No, not exactly but we'll talk about it later" got a few laughs. She covered for Fiyero really well once he left. Rob was also great in Act 2, better than Act 1, IMO. Lucy also seemed to really miss Elphaba, but knew what she had to do. No Hilty-High-note, but Lucy still went pretty high at the end og TG.

WWOTE - This was great. Penny is so good as Nessarose. She looks the part as well as sounds it. She was so mad during the "All of my life I've depended on you..." part. The Regent stage is ALOT smaller compared to other stages, so everything is alot closer together, and in WWOTE, it's really noticable. Ross was very sweet as Boq. Penny kept smiling and looking at him lovingly until he told her he mentioned Glinda. Penny plays both sweet and evil very well. Her actual WWOTE verse was very sweet and sad. I loved her "it was Elphaba, Boq! It was Elllphabbbbaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!" It was really good. I love it when it's held. biggrin.gif

Wonderful - Very good. Rob Guest was brilliant at this. Jemma just stood at the front, and gradually began to smile as the song went on. It was very nice, and I liked it alot more live than otherwise. Rob does some great skips, etc around the stage, and alot of turns where his coat can swish around. Loved the monkeys actually flying over the audioence. Glinda looks truley horrified when Fiyero chose Elphaba. Rob played this part very well. Also, Lucy has a very, very nice necklace, which is very sparkly, and which is different from other necklaces, so I hope there's a picture of it.

INTG Reprise - Lucy's so sparkly!!! Every part of that costume just glitters. The song was nicely done.

ALAYM - Very good. Lots of kissing, lots of desperation. Both Rob and Jemma sang it very well. Jemma looked genuinly scared when she thought Nessa was in danger.

Catfight Scene/NGD - The Catfight scene was really good and funny. Both girls played it really well and had great chemistry. The slaps were great, and Jemma did a wonderful evil cackle. Lucy's wand-twirling skills were very good. I loved Fiyero's entrance on the rope!! Lucy looked devistated when he was taken by the guards. There was some shock and slight appluse when Jemma came up through the trap door. NGD was good, especially the ending.

MOTWH - Ross's tin hat fell off!!! While he was trying to get the Lion out, his hat fell off his head and down into the ensomble, which was quite funny, but he just went on as though nothing had happened. The ensomble was great (again). Lucy was also really good, and very cross at Morrible for allowing things to get this out of hand. Very good and evil.

FG - This whole scene was done very well, from Dorothy's weeping to the song for FG. Lucy looked so upset when she had to let Jemma go, and again the chemistry between these too was really good, especially for Jemma being the stand-by. Very sad, and very cute.

Finale - This almost had me in tears. Lucy sang the last part beautifully. Big gasps when everyone who didn't already know found out the Elphaba doesn't actually die!! It was lovely. The girls were brilliant, everyone was.

CC - WOOO!!! The crowd was wonderful. And there was a standing ovation and everything!!! Very fitting ending for a wonderful show.

Stage Door - We sttod around at the stage door for about an hour, as the various actors came out slowly. I got autographs from all the mains accept Nessarose, and I also got the Midwife.

Me with Jemma:

More SD pictures in a day or two (they're on my friend's camera).

All in all, the show was BRILLIANT, and I can't wait to see it again. And anyone who gets Jemma will NOT be dissapionted, as she is wonderful. She's the Lisa Brescia (when she was stand-by) of Australia. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the review! Great to hear other opinions. I am hoping to catch Jemma at one performance at least because I love her tone. Knowing my luck I'll get Amanda every time.. nothing wrong with that but I always get the understudies when I DON'T want to see them. lol. You're right about Lucy's operatic vocals, very pleasant.

Thanks for the great review eponine101. It was very enjoyable to read, and counting down the days until I see it for myself. heartbeat.gif

Apparently Lucy wasn't going to be on tonights show and not sure if Amanda & Anthony were back either, lets hope the bug thats going around doesn't get any worse and the original cast is back and in full health by opening night.

Amanda was on tonight, Erin Hasan on as Glinda. Apparently Amanda was phenomenal, and Erin was great for her first time from what my friend told me. Alot of people are saying "oh shes sick etc. hence why shes not on" but during previews its not uncommon...especially with a show that has insane singing like this does, to give the leads a break for them to be fresh for opening night. Callea was most definately sick, but the two girls one would assume were allocated these shows off so that they are 100% for opening night.

Great review...lets' just get one thing straight though.....NEVER EVER worry about posting a long review...when I read your comment stating that...I was like..YAY!! Details bring the show to life for those of us who have not seen yet....now only 45 hrs to go! kittydance.gif

We spoke to Ross at Stage Door, and he said that Anthony was going to be out that night as well. Also Lucy did seem quite tired, and all the mains need to be right for Saturday (but I'm SO glad I got to see her). And the accents didn't bother me at all either. I can't wait to see it again!!

Not anymore as the last one is probably being performed right now. It opens on July 12th which w/dateline and time changes is probably just over 24 hours away. The official Wicked Melbourne website will officially open up after it opens. There's actually a time listed for its official opening if you click on the ANZ link.

ETA And I thouroughly enjoyed your long review (Long and detailed is good) and all the others that have been posted here so far. Keep them coming! Love hearing about all the new takes on this amazing play by what appears to be a very talented cast.

What did you mean by this did he leave the stage or something ?

TG - Really lovely. The ensomble was great again, and Lucy was brilliant. Her "No, not exactly but we'll talk about it later" got a few laughs. She covered for Fiyero really well once he left. Rob was also great in Act 2, better than Act 1, IMO. Lucy also seemed to really miss Elphaba, but knew what she had to do. No Hilty-High-note, but Lucy still went pretty high at the end og TG.

As part of Thank Goodness, Fiyero leaves, and Glinda tells all the public that he left to get her a drink. That is what they are talking about I would guess.

Saw Jemma perform on Wednesday Night, and I was blown away by her Performance, her singing in Defying Gravity was incredible, and her overall character presentation was spot on. Congratulations for proving that Understudies are world class.
