For me...

Elphaba- Willemijn Verkaik (she can speack english, I just dream she could sing it as well as she does in German)

or

Shoshana Bean

Glinda

Kristin Chenoweth
Man in Chair
I don't want any actress who has played Elphaba onstage to be in the film.
People need to understand that 99% of stage actors ARE NOT FILM ACTORS. It's a completely different medium requiring a completely different approach.

I agree with Nick, I think they'd be making a mistake using an ex-Elphaba/Glinda for the film. I don't think the roles are going to be the same in the film - they're all going to be toned down quite a bit, especially Glinda, just generally made less stagey, so I don't think we can necessarily say that because we loved someone on stage, that they're still going to be good when it's moved to film, because it'll be completely different. Plus I just don't want it because I'm worried there'd be the whole 'HA, my favourite's playing Elphaba in the film and therefore she's the best!', which would just be annoying.

I'm still not sure who I'd like to see in the film... I quite like the idea of Kristen Bell as Glinda because she was fantastic in Veronica Mars and can definitely still play a character quite a bit younger than her, plus she did originally train in and do musical theatre before she moved to tv/film.

Superb.

PS. So that people don't think I just like being agreed with, it's a UK politics joke.

IMO no celebrities should play the roles.... just look at ashanti singing DG at that Wicked Benefit.... ummm no

I think Amy Adams would be amazing as Glinda. I'd also like to see Katharine McPhee as Elphaba.
degeorgetitanic
I'm still pushing for Anne Hathaway as Elphie...her acting is amazing and she is a trained singer and I've heard she has a fantastic belt. And she can def. act fierce, look at "Alice"

Or heck, I think that an unknown as Elphaba with a bigger name as Glinda would work, it would add a dimension of Glinda being a well known and popular girl at Shiz when Elphaba comes and is just a regular girl who has a different skin color and a gift.

I disagree with this. Take a look at A Streetcar Named Desire or The Bad Seed to see how well stage actors transition into their roles onscreen.

Rare exceptions, given that they had some of the finest actors of any generation (Leigh, Brando and Malden in particular).
Some actors are talented enough to work in many media: Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Laurence Olivier etc.
Eden Espinosa or Dee Roscioli? I highly doubt it.

If they know what they're doing, they'll hire a film actor/an unknown trained in film and it'll do quite well. Casting Kerry Ellis might please some fanboys/girls but ultimately none of the actresses who've played the part on stage are right for the film.
clockworkgirl21
I also hope they don't cast anyone who's done the role on stage. But Amy Adams as Ginda would make me happy.
DearOldShiz
Too soon! It's still selling out on Broadway and even if they go into production next year, it'll still be too soon! They need to wait as long as PHANTOM did.

I'm completely against a Wicked movie in the first place unless they do a non-musical adaptation of the book.

I agree. I think the movie will be the downfall of the musical. I know they said they'd wait until it dies down before releasing a movie, but still...come on.
imaginarypeanut
^ I'd also much prefer a non-musical adaptation of the book. I just can't see the musical turning out to be anything but cheesy and silly on film, but I'd love to see the book made into a movie.
Robert Upland
I can't wait for the movie. If it does anything, I think it will bring new fans. Will a movie make you guys want to see the stage version any less?
clockworkgirl21
I can't wait for the movie either!

But I'm also hoping for a movie version of the book someday.
Robert Upland
^I think that'll happen eventually, Lisa. In an interview Gregory Maguire said he had sold the rights for a non-musical adaption of the book to ABCtv.

Of course not. I just don't think a movie could begin to do justice to what Wicked is onstage. I think a movie based on the book could be wonderful if it has the right cast, director, etc.

It seems that Lea Michele may have a shot - after all, Glee's director may be working on the film...

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I don't want the movie. Seriously, that would piss me off to no end.

Is there a particular reason why? She does have the voice for it, though I would NOT want to see her in the role.

Anyone can have the voice for the movie. None of it would be live, but instead mixed up in a recording studio. Plus, it could very well turn into something like Glee, which I hope never happens to Wicked. I hope they either cast someone who has played Elphaba in one of the productions, or a fresh face.
I Couldn't Be Happier
I personally can't wait for a movie version of the musical and it will happen. The only two questions are who will be cast and when will it be out.
I have no problems with Lea Michelle in the lead role. Whoever they select needs to sing and she certainly can. The real question is who is going to be Fiyero.

Answer me that one. wink.gif

Amen to that.

Edit: I can't speak for him, but what I took that to mean is the autotuned, studio sound. I hate that.

Not only that, but Glee is over-publicized in a way that's almost annoying. With Lea Michelle as Elphaba, it would draw in all of those fans. I wouldn't want that to happen to Wicked.
Robert Upland
I think Lea would do a great job as Elphaba and I think the more fans, the better biggrin.gif
Dram_edy00
I'm sorry, but, I am highly against Lea being Elphaba if this movie gets made. I am rooting for an unknown for Elphaba/Glinda. Part of me is just torn. I want to see this happen...look at "Chicago"...the movie was made, and the show is still running. On the other side, this could completely bomb if not thought out properly...ah, well, the stage is where "Wicked" will always be for me lol
Nicole
I wish they would just record the stage version. >>
ForGood
I think the last think Wicked needs are more crazed fans who think it's the be-all and end-all of musical theatre. That said, I like the idea of filming the stage version. That would bring in more fans without it becoming too much more commercial than it already is.

I agree completely, especially with that first statement.
Johnny
I wish the fans had a say in it, I mean THEY are the ones who would buy it. Im sure most people would decide filming the stage version. They did it for cats, why not wicked?
clockworkgirl21
I would love a stage version and a movie.

But with Cats, they filmed a few different productions and put it together.
Fiyero3305
No, they filmed one production. What was "put together" about it was that they filmed without an audience and with pre-recorded vocals, rather than filming a live performance.
DefyingGravity777
I'm one of the ones that wish they would film a stage version since I fall asleep during a movie and I usually don't fall asleep during the show...lol. Knowing my luck though they would choose the current Broadway cast whom some of them I'm not crazy about! unsure.gif
imaginarypeanut
I think if they did ever film the stage version, they'd do it when it closes on Broadway, like with RENT?
Fritz
^ That's what I would hope for.
Johnny
They BETTER film it when it closes, if it ever does wink.gif *knock on woodx1000*
WizardOfAus
I'd actually really like to see Sara Ramirez tackle Elphie. Not sure if she quite has the range, but if she does I think she'd do an awesome job.
WickedinNews
I think they will cast unknowns for atleast Elphaba. They don't need star power to make this movie sell well. I find it rather stupid that they are doing this. They are selling out 100% every night, across the globe. What is the rush? The producers are taking a big risk by making this movie. Potentially losing ticket sales...

And what is going to happen if the movie bombs? I'm sure THAT will have some effect on selling out the show, despite the rave reviews and strong word of mouth.

?
People need to stop getting all in a tizzy about this - it won't be happening for a good while yet.
clockworkgirl21
RENT failed at the box office, and it didn't hurt ticket sales for the show. Of course, they made the movie because ticket sales were already low.
Fiyero3305
If I remember correctly, the PotO movie also ended up failing to make back its cost and the show's still selling strong.
clockworkgirl21
Well, ALW has the money to keep it running even if ticket sales fall.
Fiyero3305
Even if that were true, it's irrelevant to the discussion about movie failures affecting strong ticket sales.

I think it will happen sooner than we think. I'm not saying it'll be out next month, but I believe it'll take a long time to make, so casting/director announcements I think will be made sooner than I expected.
WICKEDWALES123
As long as I get either Bette Midler or Meryl Streep as Madame Morrible then I'm fine. I'm going to be greedy now and want Ann Hathaway as Nessarose also, please smile.gif
