Someone made a video on YouTube with a variety of Elphabas singing Defying Gravity (thanks so much to the maker!!) and I'm so glad it was done because it just strengthens my personal belief that Shoshana is number one and always will be!!! <3 Shoshana!!

Idina's not that great, especially in this video. Ive seen lots of videos and audios where she's totally off pitch or doesn't hit the note.

Honey, Idina won the Tony for this role. I haven't watched this video yet, but I can assure you she's probably 20x better live.

I honesty have to agree. I can take her on the CD but literally everytime I've seen a clip of her she just can't hit it!! And I can't stand the way she gasps for breath between every word!

I had never noticed the whole "gasps for breath" until I saw someone mention it here. Now that's all I hear dang it!

Me too! I didn't even notice it until ppl kept bringing it up! That's all I hear now! Which sucks cause I love Idina's voice w/o the gasps!

But no dissing anyone! All of the Elphabas are great. It's true that they all have their off nights, but it's not a good indication of how they are all the time.

Wow, seeing that video, I don't know how anyone could deny that Shoshana is the BEST!! :bow: She's AMAZING!

In the end...who sings "bring me down" right before Sho's riff? She sounded pretty good too.

Vocally, Shoshana is definitely better than Idina. Her sound is fuller, richer...her vibrato is controlled and employed effectively. She sounds like she has been more efficiently trained, and uses that training more than Idina.

Idina's voice deteriorated severely throughout her run as Elphaba, most probably due to shoddy vocal technique. Every live clip I've heard she noticeably struggles to hit the F, just managing to squeak it out for a split second, and doesn't have the support to sustain the end of the song. However, character-wise, Idina created one of the most well-acted Elphabas, in my opinion.

But...Shoshana rocks.

I love sho! She'll always be my favorite Elphie! They're all good, but IMO, Shoshana is the best.
