"Beauty and the Beast," the greatest animated film of all time, is going to be re-released in 3D in 2010. It is such a classic story and the music is just pure genius.

I'm excited because they'll be releasing a new DVD as well; I have the Platinum DVD but my sister spilled soda on the first disc and it no longer plays.

But it makes no sense that it could be in 3D.

I like the animation just the way it is as well, but maybe this version won't be as bad as we expect it to be. Perhaps it'll look like Shrek's animation.

^ Oh no, that's not what is going to happen. They're just remastering the original Disney animated movie to be in 3D. They simply digitally take some layers and make some 3D, and it's actually this whole very interesting process, it'll be wonderful! It's not the cyan/red 3D classes that give head aces, this is going to be polarized 3D like Chicken Little, Monster House, Nightmare Before Christmas Rerealease, Journey to the Center of the Earth, etc. It'll be wonderful!

Disney's animated movies are absolutely MAGICAL

and the artists who created them Gods!

They take me to another world…..*twirls and gets all light-headed breaking into song!*

I'm very excited by the new technology in animation and what is possible but I also feel a classic should be left as is. Snow White for instance has a very unique look about it with a softness that epitomises her character and I wouldn't want to see it any other way.
Part of me is intrigued though, as Beauty and the Beast has some amazing scenes I can picture working brilliantly in 3d but then I also think they are perfection as is. It's great they will be releasing a new DVD for those who don't have a copy (or who have siblings that are very careless!

), but my hope is they also include the original format as an extra for posterity; so that old school and new school alike are satisfied.
I can appreciate the idea of such a classic gaining future audiences when you consider the competition that will be out there in years to come but like the Disney sequels, it kinda smacks of a rehash on a guaranteed seller which is a little disappointing considering what other stories could be imagined and told.

I disagree, to some extent. Disney's been rereleasing its films to theatres every decade or so... that's how I was first introduced to a Disney classic or two. Granted, nowadays they've been doing it less often because of VHS (and now DVD), but this sort of thing is still in keeping with a long tradition.
LaFemmeVerte
Nov 22 2008, 05:57 AM
True, that has been the case over the years and a successful format in gaining new audiences. Beauty and the Beast was remastered for IMAX release with the additional sequence of 'Human Again' which was great to see being a deleted song originally and I do "LOVE" extras

Also, loved the fact that they included so much on the 2 disc Platinum edition and only wish the powers that be included Idina's deleted song as an extra for the Enchanted DVD release!!
I have reservations only because I see the word "re-work" and immediately think "alteration" even though I know they will be rendered on computer from the original files. The Ballroom scene

and 'Be Our Guest'

especially would be amazing in 3D but they are timeless classics and already amazing as is!

Still astounds me to think that 1 second of film is equivelent to 24 frames of animation!!!

I've never forgotten that fact from when I first heard it...gave me a whole new appreciation for the incredible patience behind the skills of these brilliant artists!

Totally understand WHY Glen Keane fought SO hard to keep 'Part of Your World' in Little Mermaid when that was going to be scrapped!

Wonder what other gems are hiding in the Disney archives??

This was actually the first film I ever saw in a movie theatre. My mother took me to the Dallas Galleria one day and we went to get some snacks at the movie theatre which is no longer there. While she paying for them I opened a door and saw "Beuaty and the Beast." I had never seen it before nor did I have any idea what movie it was, but I liked it. I was watching the part when Belle was walking through the town and then sat down by the fountain to read her book. When she showed it to the sheep one of them ate part of a page and it made me laugh. My mom called me to come on right after Maurice blew up his machine.

Warner Bros. and Disney whetted the appetites of exhibitors at ShoWest on Tuesday with footage of Buzz Lightyear, Scrooge, Harry Potter and a slew of 3-D extravaganzas, as both studios unveiled extended clips of their upcoming titles.
The Mouse House's afternoon session was all about 3-D, as the studio unspooled plenty of footage from its format slate, with motion picture group prexy Mark Zoradi serving as emcee.

Remember people, this is POLARIZED 3D! Similar to IMAX 3D or stuff you see in Universal like Shrek 4D. This isn't the crappy red/cyan glasses stuff. You will see all of the original colors and stuff but it will pop out.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I can't stand 3D movies. I don't see movies that are 3D unless they release them in 2D as well. It feels like we're going back to the 80s, with pointless 3D thrown in and it's all very gimmicky and blahhh to me. It seems just like an excuse to tack on a few extra dollars to the price of a ticket. :/

I find any 3D gimmicky, not just that kind - there just really isn't a reason for it in most of the movies they use it in, IMO. Especially Beauty and the Beast... I wish Disney would put their efforts into releasing their other movies on special DVDs (like Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, etc) before re-re-releasing BATB in theaters, lol.

CORRECTION: As pointed out by reader Alexander in comments, Beauty and the Beast producer Don Hahn mentioned at the D23 Expo last year that the re-release has been postponed until some time in 2011 (exactly when has not yet been determined), primarily to have it coincide with the film’s 20th anniversary. Hollywood trade publication Variety actually reported the news this past October in a piece about releases scheduled for 2011, to no fanfare online.
How this all got past myself, John, and others, I do not know! Disney PR didn’t tell me of any such change, only that the re-release had been dropped from their schedule for this year. Still, my apologies.
As honestly embarrassed as I am to be having to correct a story so thoroughly, I’m exceedingly happy that the release of one of my favourite Disney classics in 3-D has not been cancelled or “postponed indefinitely”.

One of the animators commented about it a few weeks ago:
QUOTE
Having produced Disney's award-winning classic Beauty and the Beast, we asked Hahn for a status update on the plan to convert the 2D animated musical to 3D for release in 2011, the film's 20th Anniversary.
"We just finished it a couple weeks ago, it's spectacular," he told us. "I think it's one of the benefits of doing 'Beauty and the Beast' on CAPS, the animation computer system, was that all the artwork was stored on levels, so that we could go back and dimensionalize it, turn it into a 3D movie. I can't say it was easy, but with a lot of help from Pixar, and a lot of brainy software writers, we were able to create some software that was able to help us convert it into a 3D film."
He even commented on the chances of seeing some of the other movies featured in his documentary being converted to 3D for theatrical re-releases in the future. "Obviously, 3D is a huge deal these days, and if 'Beauty and the Beast' works, which it does. It's glorious in 3D, I think we'll probably take some of the other premium titles and turn them into 3D as well."

Very sorry for triple posting , but we don't have to wait for the 3D release to see the film in theaters! Jordin Sparks will be hosting a HD sing-along version of the film, which will take place in movie theaters for two nights only September 29 and October 2!

She will show a behind the scenes look at her new music video where she sings the title song. There will also be commentary from producer Don Hahn, interviews with the cast and an inside look at how the animation was created. Everyone who goes to see this will get to sing along to all of the classic songs. I can't wait to see the film in theaters again!

I just got back from seeing the sing-a-long version. I thought the movie was absoloutley stunning in HD, even though it was not in 3D. Listening to the songs again in the theatre was also a pleasure. Before the film began Jordin Sparks hosted a behind the scenes look at her new music video and there were also appearences by people who talked about their experiences in the musical adaptation: Donny Osmond, Christy Carlson Romano, Deborah Gibson, Andrea McArdle, Nick Jonas, and Jamie-Lynn Sigler. The "Human Again" scene from the 2002 re-release was not shown, but I did not mind. Overall, I am very happy that I got to see the movie in theaters again.
