Full Version: Would Amanda do Broadway?

It did get my mind ticking over when Amanda performed on bway recently that she could be invited to perform the role in the US (after Aus closes or we get a new Elphaba). It would obviously require a few logistics but a transfer to Bway wouldn't surprise me. The only reason that would prevent Amanda from Broadway would be her daughter which I'm certain is her main priority (as it should). If Kerry didn't transfer to Bway I'd be less likely to think it a possibility but some Australians have made a splash in lead roles on Bway after finishing their Aussie run. It would be wonderful for the US to see the Amazing Amanda (in my opinion they've not had a really good Elphaba in a long while) but I like the fact that Amanda is 'our' Elphaba and we have Wicked in a cul de sac. In fact it seems like the Melbourne production of Wicked along with Tokyo gets the least exposure in the Wicked fandom community. In a way I like that because it's very much focussed on Australia and Australian audiences only. It also seems to appeal to a different demographic than the US. I don't realistically see Amanda on Bway but it did get me contemplating.

Also how would you feel about Amanda and/or Lucy leaving Wicked after a year or so when their contract expires? Because we don't get so many shows actors tend to stick with the production until it closes and in a way, I'd like to see new witches. I could imagine heading off to the bway production every time there was a cast change to see what is new and different. Its more about variety than anything. Do you think we'll ever get new witches and how would you feel about it?
I personally think the girls will stay with the show right through but if Wicked continues and continues there may be a witch change? I'm actually more excited by replacements in the roles of Morrible and Fiyero to freshen things up as I'm not sure the entire cast will remain after contracts expire (I don't see Maggie continuing but that's a gut feeling). New supporting roles will also alter the interaction between the witches as well.

I'd like to see Amanda play the role on Broadway. If the producers decide not to bring someone new again in like Nicole, then I'd be happy if her or Carmen Cusack took over.

The Witches are such demanding roles that eventually we will have 'new witches' if the show plays for as long in Aus as it has in the US, but I think that both Lucy and Amanda would want to play Sydney if/when the show goes there, so new witches are far into the future for the Australian Production I would think.

As for Amanda playing Broadway...she definitely is worthy of a shot at Broadway, in any production that gets lucky enough to have her.

Hmm, anywhere would be lucky to have Amanda. However I selfishly hope that she stays here in Oz, even though I'm not too close to Melbourne and don't often get to see the show.

Agreed that both the girls will want to do the show in Sydney when it hopefully moves over there. And they themselves have said that these are the roles of a lifetime and they want to stay with the show as long as they possibly can.

I think it would be interesting to see new witches. Though if/when Lucy or Amanda leave, I would hope that Jemma and Lucy would be made the witches fulltime.

I think it'd be the most likely option, having Jemma promoted full-time. Technically it wouldn't be a new Elphaba to us but to the general audience (if they didn't see the show on a Saturday matinee).

It's a really complicated situation - particularly the complicated Equity (the New York theatre union) rules and visa/green card issues for overseas performers. It's really REALLY hard for international performers to get permission to perform on Broadway because it technically takes jobs away from local performers, with exceptions being made for West End performers where there's always a kind of "trade" arrangement. So, even if the New York producers want her, it's a really expensive, complex exercise so I don't personally see it happening.

Yeah, it really a complicated thing. Not to mention Amanda's union, they would have to allow her to perform outside the country. They really do want to avoid those type of things. West End and Toronto are really the only places where it is a little less complicated.
