Okay, so I flew up to Boston from New Orleans on sunday and decided last minute to travel to NYC. FYI, never do this, you end up spending a hell of a lot more than you should, and you are very un-prepared. Okay, onto the review. I did the lottery for the matinee, about 200 people were there. Lost. Darn. Grabbed an extra playbill and met Dee/P.J Very lovely people! I found it very sad and hysterical how when Dee was walking away someone from the crowd who was late for stage door said, "oh my god is that Elphaba?!?!" "yes you just missed her" "ELPHABA! ELPHABA COME BACK!" then the next thing you know, Dee literally starts RUNNING. Very comical but I felt so bad for her. Okay so I lost the night lottery too. There were nearly 700 people there. I met Sean McCort as well. Lovely guy. So we decided to wait in the cancellation line and ended up getting 11th row dead center orchestra seats for about 147 each! It was so worrth it! Laura was on for the matinee as well. She was AMAZING.
NOMTW
Okay, so lights go dim, cue the citizens of OZ. I've seen the show on the road three times, and this production beats all! There's nothing like seeing Wicked on Broadway. Laura comes down on the bubble. She gets major applause. Loved her. She reminds me a lot of Annaleigh Ashford, however throughout the night everything she does is completely original.
Samantha Zack was on as the Witche's Mother, fantastic job. Her scream was very funny. Again, Laura plays the role of Glinda very well. She had a very peculiar high note, wasn't like Alli's, nor Megan's, but like Laura's. Completely original
DOS
In comes Dee. no one clapped. I did. then people caught on. Dee was very angry tonight. Not exactly sure why. She was straight forward with her lines, I liked it. Rondi got no applause, boo. She did the little butt flash. LOVED IT. Laura was extremely hysterical. She had the entire audience laughing at the very littlest bits of everything.
TWAI
Dee goes from angry, immediately back to shy, then quickly back to angry. Very nice mix. I really felt for her character, as well as the rest of the audience. Woah, can she belt! I've seen her on youtube and she usually is very plain, but her performance tonight was totally 100% better! I always thought of her as being very plain, yeah right! her "FEELINGS THINGS I'VE NEVER FELT!" riff was sooo orgasmic and loud, it had the entire audience shaking with fear, excitment, pleading for more. You go dee! She owned this. This was her night. As it should be.
WITF
Not much to say about this song. Very comical. Dee was great. Once again the straight-forward use of her lines came in great when she said, "blonde". Laura stretched out the "unusually..." which had the entire crowd laughing as usual. Laura is great. No further comments needed.
Dancing Through Life
Kevin was great. He got a hair cut and looks very handsome. From what I understand, Glinda and Fiyero kiss during this song, but they didn't. He did the, "stage kiss" with the thumbs between the lips. I found this weird at first, but then remembered he was married..but he's also an actor as well. The ensemble laughed and ad-libed a lot when Elphaba walks in with the hat on. Someone asked him at the stage door why he did this and he said he is very committed to his wife. too cute.Laura looked very concerned and upset for her friend, she finally realized that what she had done.was wrong. And it hurt her. LOVED IT. This was a major best friend moment, and I adored every second of it
Popular
This was Laura's moment. At the very beginning she made her character look like she didn't know what to do. Should she hug Elphie? Or should she tap her? Quickly goes into the hug and looks as if she's trying to squeeze the green out of her. Very cute. The way she does things are very simple, and I believe she would make a very good Elle Woods. She was great. Some glinda's like to gently lift the top of Elphaba's dress and make a quick scream, however when Laura did it, she lifted it, stared, and said, "woah!" then threw it down like, "TO MUCH FOR ME!" she liked to flash her butt throughout the song. Very funny. Her toss toss was very funny, and tried to get it right like it took very hard practice. Loved her vocals throughout this.
I'm Not That Girl-Train Station
So romantic! Kevin was so into his character, and glanced quickly over the railing of the bridge for a last quick glance at Elphaba, wishing she was there. When Dee started singing my heart sank. She wanted the audience to understand what her character was going through. Kevin showed throughout this song that he really liked Elphaba and Glinda was just a cover up for his emotions. Poor her. Glinda really grew upset during this scene. she longed to be loved. This is where she is weak. When Elphaba asked her to go to the Emerald City with her, she had this look like, "hell I deserve it. My boyfriend is driving me nuts, I could use a girl's night" and runs off stage eagerly.
One Short Day
Not much to say about this song either. Very Very green. I've never seen the lights extend so far out into the audience before. Another wonderful attribute of seeing the show on Broadway. Dee and Laura have excellent chemistry. They held hands as much as they could throughout the song. So adorable.
Sentimental Man
P.J got no applause sadly. Eh oh well. Laura was very frightened throughout this scene, I loved how Dee would go voluntarily in front of her, as if to protect her. Laura seemed like she wanted to be with the Wizard very much! Dee commanded the stage once she found out what P.J and Rondi wanted her to do was wrong. She puts her foot down, and runs off stage in terror and revolt.
Defying Gravity
Dee looks very determined. When Laura yells at her for flying off the handle, she makes it look like she has never yelled before in her life. She's very subtle after. Rondi's speech was bone chilling. She had the entire audience convinced that Elphaba was evil. We were hooked! I loved how Laura screamed, "NO!" in revolt, as if now she was Elphaba and Elphie was her. She was the defender. Dee sang the song very well, we were all convinced that she was really not the evil one. She was not wicked. Laura and Dee once again held hands as much as they could. Poor Laura, she was loosing the only good friend she had. When Dee runs to the lift, Laura puts one foot on the stairs determined not to let the guards up. They grabbed her little petite body and threw her around the stage like a rag doll, with her screaming every moment of it. When Dee said, "ITS NOT HER!..." It sent chills down my flipping spine. Once again the message of Best Friends is encouraged. When Dee says, "ITS MEE" her face is full of regret, sorrow, hurt, and protection. She would take all the blame for Glinda. She has always lived a life of being the ugly green girl, this was her moment. Major SUCK IT moment for Elphaba. Usually I've always found Dee to use the same riffs and be very..plain. simple even. I was wrong! That girl did an enormous growl on, "loorrrroororororok to the westernrnrnrnrn skyyyy!" It was so much better than Kerry's riff and so much different. This was Dee's riff! She is completely original. Laura had tears streaming down her face, she would have no clue when she would see her again. Best friends rock. Dee and Laura rock. YOU GO DEE!
Okay sorry guys. I just added this entire new editorial review of the 2nd act and it deleted it. So I will try to have it up by Wednesday! All I can say is that LAURA FLIPPING ROCKS! I WANT HER TO BE LEAD SOOO BAD!
