Thanks for the link.

The breaking of that record -- not to mention a couple of house records along the Rialto -- was helped along by the fact that this season was the first that productions have reported "gross gross" sales vs. the smaller "net gross."

Now I don't know exactly what this means, but it sounds like breaking the record isn't that significant because they changed the rules by which it was figured. Seems like it is like saying Federer broke a record because he was using a better tennis racket.

WICKED jacks their ticket prices up for holiday weeks. They go up to something like $130 for regular orchestra seats.

Yay! Congratulations Broadway cast of Wicked! I bet it had something to do with Dee and Erin being in the show. Yep, that was definitely it! Woot! Those girls are brilliant!
Fiyero3305
I really doubt it had anything to do with Dee and Erin, since they're not really a draw for the general public, aren't big names in musical theatre in general, and even among Wicked fans aren't two of the bigger names.
and1987
It most likely had to do with the fact it was Thanksgiving weekend.

...I meant it as a joke. I know people aren't going just to see them. But word of mouth is a powerful thing.

And they are two of the bigger names for people living in Chicago and surrounding areas. Trust me. Just not for you.

Last year they broke the record in the last week of the year.

And yes Wicked does put their prices up $10 but only on prime nights(Friday and Sat night)

*nods* Dee especially -- she was in Chicago for so long that most people in the area who have seen the show anytime recently have seen her.

Anyway . . .congrats, Wicked! That's awesome!

too bad it just beat it with $2,096,745 this past week (dec 21-27)

Yep I was just about to post about it:

During last week's bustling tourist season, the Great White Way brought in a staggering amount of $$$$$.

Wicked was the most impressive, raking in $2,092,745 and beating its Thanksgiving record of the top grossing week in the history of the Rialto.

Coming in right behind was The Lion King with $1,714,566, The Phantom of the Opera with $1,248,943, Shrek the Musical bringing in $1,055,261 and the revival of A Little Night Music with $985,662.

Not to mention, In the Heights increased their house by 53% and the new hit Fela! climbed by 22%.

Pretty impressive considering the recession! Plus, the theater makes everyone forget their problems!

Anyone think Wicked will ever hit a sweet $3mill? lol
degeorgetitanic
I dont see how it could...unless they did a 9 show week during a big holiday season. At 100% attendence I could see it getting up to $2,100,000 maybe, but that would be the most, $3,000,000 means 100% attendence, 9+ show week, and tickets on average over $120 lol
Wickedly*Defying*Gravity
Eh i was more kidding although it WOULD be sweet lol. While 3mill prob wont happen in a week, I do predict that it'll be as famous as Phantom one day and even beat Phantom!

For the third time in just six weeks, another record was broken. This time Wicked made $2,125,740! Additionally, the show's three other North American productions broke house records in San Francisco ($1,485,692), Providence ($1,793,764), and Schenectady ($1,657,139), bringing the musical's one-week North American box office gross to $7,062,335.

My god. Why anyone would pay those outrageous prices to see WICKED is beyond me. Thank god for the lottery!
