Tiggular in the show, yep, but he's just Fiyero of the Arjiki's in the book I think...

Yeah. I don't think he has a last name. Does anyone have a last name, really, in the book? Elphaba is the Third Thropp Decending and Glinda is Glinda of the Arduennas, but Elphaba isn't Elphaba Thropp (better go edit my fanfics, now that I think about it).

In the book, Elphie's isn't actually Thropp because that was her mother's maiden name (if that at all). Elphie, Nessa, and SHell would have their father's surname.

Feb 8 2006, 01:47 PM
Yeah, that's true. Perhaps her Mom cared more for her then her father so she chose her mother's name? Or perhaps they just liked the way the name sounded (the writers)

hmm.. you're right. none of them have last names... i hadn't thought of that.

But in SOAW they always refer to Elphie as Elphaba Thropp. So, I guess she decided to take her mothers name.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's Elphaba Thropp and Fiyero Tiggular, Glinda's is Glinda Arduenna then Chuffery or something.....I can't remember!!!!

I don't know if "Thropp" in the novel is a surname so much as it is a title, so I'd think that the name "Elphaba Thropp" was from the show (but I haven't read SoaW). Likewise, I think Galinda Upland was a name created by the show, and I don't remember Tiggular even being mentioned in the book.

Yeah, bookG(a)linda is Galinda Ardenua. Fiyero and Boq have no last name. I believe I might have seen Elpahaba referred to as Elphabe Thropp, but perhaps not. it was the Thropp Third Decending.

If I remember correctly "Thropp" is the last name from her mothers side but in their family they took the maternal last name because they were basically royalty (more or less). Melena's Dad was in power as the Eminent Thropp, the leader of munchkinland, only because he didn't have a sister. I don't remember why Melena didn't be come the Eminent Thropp when she was old enough, perhaps someone can refresh my memory. That's how Nessa came into power cause she was 4th in line. After Melena died (second), and Elphaba all but disappeared (Third) she got the title and the power.
I also remember a family member of Fiyero's, a female cousin I believe, popped up in there some where and she might have had a last name. Even if that were true that doesn't mean it'd be the same as Fiyero's, just thought I'd put that out there.

Wicked refers to Elphaba and Nessarose as the "Thropp sisters", so I would assume that is their last name.

I don't think that's the case here. I think they would take the name of whoever was more "famous". Since the Eminent Thropp is well-known, they would take that name so people would have a better idea of who they were.
Like, if you've seen/read Ella Enchanted...she goes by Ella of Frell to establish who she is and where she is from...

It mentions that Liir goes by both Liir
Thropp (as in the Eminent
Thropp) and Liir
Ko (Fiyero lived in/ruled Kiamo
Ko), so I would think that in the book, Fiyero's name would be Fiyero Ko. However, in the musical, his name is Fiyero Tiggular.
(By the way, I definitely love the idea of Tiggular Wireless phone service; that was brilliant =). Where do I sign up for a service plan? =P)

Gregory Maguire said in an interview, (from
http://www.ivillage.co.uk/newspol/celeb/ci...4530-4,00.html) that he didn't give Fiyero a surname and that Winnie Holzman made up Fiyero's surname as Tiggular for the musical. Gregory Maguire says in the interview that he liked this surname so much that he will be using it in the next book, A Lion Among Men.
So, Fiyero did not ever have a surname in the books and only until the musical was created.

Pretty cool, eh?

I don't know... but he should take the idea of Fiyero and Elphaba really being alive and make that one work!
