Entertainment Weekly magazine has an issue about the 100 greatest characters of the last 20 years and guess who made it on the list? Elphaba!!!! biggrin.gif I was kind of hoping she will be in the top 10 or at least the top 20, but she's #79. Here's what it says:

#79 Elphaba: In the hit Broadway musical Wicked, loosely based on The Wizard of Oz, the future wicked witch Elphaba is defined by her green skin, pointy hat, and overcoming-the-odds anthem "Defying Gravity", a challenging song that nearly tripped up Idina Menzel, who originated the role in 2003. "I totally cracked," she says of her audition. "I screamed the F-word at the top of my lungs, took a breath, and then nailed the note"

Also, on the list is Mimi Marquez from "RENT" and Violet from "August: Osage County, those are the only three characters from a Broadway musical/play, so it's kind of cool to see them here!!!
Here's a link that I found on Broadway.com: http://www.broadway.com/buzz/152543/broadw...100-characters/

I was also thrilled to see Elphaba make the list. I love Entertainment Weekly and I think she's a worthy inclusion.

However, I see Mimi from Rent as an interesting choice. In my mind, she isn't the most iconic character from the show. When I think of Rent, I think of Mark. Maybe that's just because he's a dream role of mine. Can anyone add to this?

Mark doesn't really embody the message or theme of the show the way Angel and Mimi do, and I would imagine they chose Mimi because her personal style was largely iconic of the show and I'm pretty sure was the main inspiration for the Rent-themed clothing line that was put out.

I see Angel as being much more a symbol of the show than Mimi. Oh well. I'm just glad EW gave musical theatre some recognition. Their Stage section is usually quite good when they actually do it.
