In this thread we can talk about all of Wicked's amazing standby's and understudies. Who is your favorite? Which u/s did you see, did you enjoy their performance? I am currently obsessing over Mariand Torres, (current 1st tour s/b) who I saw in Dallas, LOVE HER!

They work just as hard, and need just as much praise,
Enjoy and discuss! biggrin.gif

All the standbys/understudies I've seen:

Laura Bell Bundy (Glinda) - My first Glinda and I loved her. Impeccable comic timing. It would have been great if she'd gotten the chance to make the role her own.

Kristoffer Cusick (Fiyero) - Meh. Boring. Saw him three times as lead and had the same reaction.

Sean McCourt (Wizard) - I didn't care for his portrayal, but looking back, I think it was because I was too biased against anyone who wasn't Joel.

Eden Espinosa (Elphaba) - I saw her in Act 2 and she blew the roof off. Amazing. Unfortunately, her standby days were the highlight of her Wicked career.

Maria Eberline (Elphaba) - Liked her, but didn't love her. Her acting was quite impressive.

Lisa Brescia (Elphaba) - Angelic, radiant, perfection. I can't describe how deeply she moved me. I saw her twice as lead and she got even better.

Paul Slade Smith (Dillamond) - Meh. Not goat-like enough for me.
Dram_edy00
The only standby I have seen in a main role was Lisa Brescia as Elphaba back on Broadway in 2008. I absolutely loved her, and she was very nice at SD lol. I hope to see another standby performance in the future (if possible lol!)
kev379
I've seen:

Carrie Manolakos: She was my first Elphaba and will always have a place in my heart! I still can't get over how short she is! It really adds to her character!

Jenn Furman: The only Morrible who actually SINGS the lines! Doesn't remember much else aside from she looked really young!

Don Richard (as Dillamond) I saw him twice as Dillamond! I really liked him, but I really can't compare him because I have only seen one other Dillamond.

Peter Ermedes (as Witches Father/OO) I love his facial expressions!

Anne Brummel: My second favorite Elphaba!

Michelle London (as Nessa): So good! She really makes Nessa more frustrated than evil. Her act 2 is better than her act 1

Emily Ferranti (as Nessa): Very good also! She is almost the polar opposite of Michelle. I felt she took a more evil approach to the role. And her act 1 is better than her act 2 IMO.
wickedlou
Okay now for the standbys/understudies I've seen:

Kathy Santen (Morrible): To this day it baffles me on how she isn't lead somewhere. I've seen her twice and both times she was spot on with singing and acting. She defiantly has that haunting chill about her and it's always intereseting to see a slimmer Morrible.
Lori Ann Ferreri (Nessarose): Lori's Nessa didn't blow me away but she was good! Her acting could have been a little better and her singing could have been a little better but I think she did do a great job. I do remember that she had fantastic chemistry with SJB.
Brad Bass (Fiyero): Such an awesome Fiyero, he really hit the nail on the head for me, I feel like he really was Fiyero. His singing and acting was perfect. I'm so glad I got to see him play the role.
Julie Reiber (Elphaba): Love love love love love her. Fantastic for the role and I can not believe that she was never promoted. Her singing was unbelieveable and her acting was unique. I am so lucky to have seen her twice in the role. She is stunning in and out of her green makeup.
Anthony Galde (Dillamond): He was very good, his baaah didn't sound as electronic as some other Dillamond's have. He is so nice too.
Eddie Pendergraft (Boq): He was a very different Boq, as the show was going on I wasn't totally sure if I liked him or not but now that I think back on it, I really did like him. I wouldn't mind seeing him again.
Laura Woyasz (Glinda): Obsessed with her. Everything she did was golden. Her speaking and singing voice melts in your ear and you can't help but love her. Her acting choices were fantastic. She must be promoted and if you ever get the chance to see her, do it!
aelphaba
Vicki Noon: all-time favorite Elphaba ever; needless to say I didn't care that she was a standby and was so thrilled when she was promoted.

Felicia Ricci also has an astounding voice.

Natalie Daradich was my favorite Glinda standby; Libby was awesome but I only saw her once and it was really close to Eden's last so she was crying a lot, haha. <3

I saw the promotional news video of Carrie Manolakos doing TW&I and it really made me wish she'd gone on while she was here in SF, it was amazing!

I saw Laura Woyasz in New York in late May and was not enthralled.
Chenzel
The only standby I saw live was Carrie Manolakos and she blew me away. Should have been promoted.

My standbys and understudies:

Cassidy Janson (Elphaba s/b) - Her singing could have been better, but her acting was incredibly strong, and I really enjoyed her portrayal.

Vicki Noon (Elphaba s/b) - Really, really loved both her singing and acting, and I'm so glad she got promoted to lead.

Ashleigh Gray (Elphaba s/b) - Good singing for the most part, but she sounded a little strained on some higher notes. And I couldn't really get behind her acting choices, her Elphaba didn't have enough of a backbone until midway through the second act.

Sabrina Carter (Elphaba u/s) - I got to see her first full performance, and I absolutely loved her. Beautiful voice, and fantastic acting.

Merideth Kaye Clark (Elphaba s/b) - There wasn't anything that I disliked, but there wasn't anything I especially liked either. She just didn't really make much of an impression.

Emily Rozek (Glinda s/b) - Possibly the prettiest voice I've heard for Glinda. Her acting reminded me of bookverse Glinda, a little more subdued, which was really interesting.

Sarah Earnshaw (Glinda s/b) - I felt like she was trying to imitate Dianne at times, and found it hard to connect with her Glinda. Not one of my favorites, but I was still glad to finally see her after hearing so much about her.

Standout understudies that I've seen in other roles include DJ Gregory (Fiyero), Caroline Keiff (Nessa), and Andy Mace (Wizard).

Felicia Ricci also has an astounding voice.

Indeed! Even though I think she'd be better suited for Glinda, her Elphaba is amazing.
xbrunette-in-the-bubblex
Just have to say that Nikki Davis-Jones (the current London stand-by Elphaba) is absolutely amazing. Definitely my favourite Elphaba that I've seen.
wickedly dudley
Here comes my long list of Standby's and/or Understudies. I always love walking in and seeing the board and I actually enjoy seeing how other people play the roles. Every performer brings their own talents to the characters and for me seeing new interpretations helps to keep my love for Wicked alive and well!

Elphaba:

First one for me was Caissie Levy when she was Eden's S/B and I was so excited that I got to see her very 1st performance in L.A. on November 20, 2007. Not only did I get to see her but Megan was out and I also saw Emily Rozek as Glinda. Caissie made an impressive debut and I remember writing in my review that night that the future of the L.A. production was in good hands. I absolutely adored Caissie's portrayal and her "I'm so happy I could MELT!" was to die for. Even today, of all the performances that I've seen, Caissie's last show on May 11, 2008 was stunning and my favorite show of all those that I've ever seen!

Next was another first show this one for Marcie Dodd on April 22, 2008 when she was the U/S and performed that night for the first time in several years in preparation for taking over as the S/B for Teal Wicks. She was very good but unfortunately it was a night filled with lots of flubs and bloopers with 4 understudies and definitely an uneven performance by everyone. I would see her again as S/B twice more on July 6, 2008 (Awesome) and July 23, 2008 (Superb!) If I heard that Marcie was going on I would make a special trip in to see her!

On January 2, 2009 just before the L.A. production closed I saw Vicki Noon. Had two friends that I hadn't seen in years and took them to see Wicked for the 1st time and I have to admit I was disappointed that they wouldn't see Eden that night but I was in for a surprise when I saw and heard Vicki for the 1st time. I loved her and my friends couldn't even imagine how anyone else could be better than her. So happy that Vicki got promoted to the 2nd tour and I can't wait to see her again when she comes to OCPAC in March of 2011; just hoping she'll still be with the show!

Then there was Teal Wicks who I waited a long time to see her name on the board and it finally happened on April 3, 2008. I enjoyed her very much that night. Her voice was extremely powerful but it would lead to what I saw way too much happen to other Elphaba's, vocal problems, absences, and eventually leaving the show. I saw Teal 4 times: 4/3/08 (E), 4/18/08 (E), 4/27/08 and then for the last time on 9/14/08 (BaaaD). It was very evident that her vocal problems had become very bad and they really ruined the last performance that I ever saw with her as Elphaba..

On tour I saw two SB's/US's on the same day in San Diego at the matinee on August 8, 2009: Meredith Kaye Clark and Stefanie Brown. Meredith was fantastic and hopefully someday she may return to the role as a lead; she deserves it!

Now comes Glinda:

First up is Emily Rozek who I saw four times: June 26, 2007 (Good); August 7, 2007 (Better than 1st time); November 20, 2007 when Caissie Levy made her debut (Good) and for the last time on February 12, 2008 when I saw her best performance just before she left the L.A. cast. Emily had a stunning voice and I enjoyed her very much. Too bad that she never got to be the lead in another production but so happy that she's enjoying her married life with her family. biggrin.gif

After Emily left Laura Woyasz took over and I saw her for the 1st time on April 27, 2008, when once again I took friends who had never seen the show. I was excited to see her and she didn't disappoint at all; we all loved her! I especially liked when she performed with Marcie. Together they were perfection on July 6, 2008 applause.gif. The last time was on Sept. 14, 2008 and not even Laura could save that show with Teal which was by far the worst of any show that I ever saw!

Then comes Stefanie Brown who as I mentioned I saw at the matinee with Meredith on August 8, 2009 in San Diego. She is such a cutie and so pleasant to talk with that it's hard to say anything bad about her. Unfortunately that day she hadn't performed the role I think for awhile and she had so many bloopers, the best being when she botched a whole refrain of Popular and had to repeat it until she caught up with the orchestra. No one except for the Wicked fanatics would have noticed it at all.

Fiyero:

Strange to say but of all the times that I've seen the play I only saw two U/S. The first was at the Pantages with the touring production on July 6, 2005 when I saw Wicked for the first time. It was supposed to be Derrick Williams but it was a very young Adam Lambert long before his AI fame. Can't believe I'm going to say this but I remember absolutely nothing about his portrayal. I know others have seen him and loved him but during the Pantages tenure I never got to see him. The only U/S I saw there was Michael Seelbach on August 21, 2007. I liked him but not his high-pitched voice which was way too high for Fiyero.

Boq:

Only saw one in all the shows that I saw and it was Alexander Selma who I saw twice on June 26, 2007 (OK) and then again on April 3, 2008 (Boring!)--comments I wrote in my Playbills.

Nessarose:

Saw only two U/S's play the role: Natalie Daradich on April 22, 2008, the night Marcie moved from the role to play Elphaba. She was good but unfortunately it was hard not to compare her to Marcie who was my favorite Nessa of any that I ever saw. Then I saw my second on Broadway on April 23, 2009 Robin Willner. She was totally forgettable unfortunately for me!

Morrible:

I always wanted to see Linda Kerns in the role but never got the chance. The only one I saw was Dionni Michelle Collins on November 20, 2007 and for me she was horrible. I can't remember sitting at a Wicked performance and grimmacing and talking to myself about any actor's portrayal but hers. I loved Dionni in the ensemble but NOT as Morrible just too young and unbelievable for me.

Dr. Dillamond:

Only one person Tim Talman who I saw twice on April 22, 2008 and May 18, 2008

The Wizard:

Absolutely no one else but the two who never missed in LA John Rubinstein and David Garrison.

The Minor Roles:

Witch's Father: Brian Munn (6/26/07), Keith A Bearden (4/22/08, 5/18/08--Bad!, 10/31/08)

Witch's Mother: What is there to say about this role since for me they all look the same and could be interchangeable: Gina Starbuck/Roslyn Roberson/Carson Reide, Samantha Zack/Kristen Faith Oei/Alexis Ann Carra and Neka Zang.

And last but not least Chistery who in L.A. was played by Peter John Chursin and for him I saw Aleks Pevec, James Davies, Everth Lopez and Eric Stretch who was a very BIG Chistery; definitely stood out!

Lots of heartbeat.gif for these consummate performers who brought me lots of joy with their performances as standby's. applause.gif applause.gif applause.gif

I have seen only one standby....I never get lucky about seeing u/s or s/b's LOL

Anne Brummel I have heard nothing but wonderful things about her from everyone who has seen her and I was hoping to see her my first trip in Charlotte and got upset I wasn't seeing her (but Vicki was beyond amazing) but the following week a trip came together just to go try the lottery and wound up seeing Anne's Elphie 3rd row back! She blew the roof off the place. I was in shock by the end of act 1! Her Wizard and I was just jaw dropping amazing and she does the crazy riffs (as I call them) so well. Her Defying Gravity (even minus the growl) was one of the best I have ever seen. No Good Deed, is bone chilling awesome. Her Fiyero riff is one of the best too.

Just truly enjoyed her Elphaba. She's amazing in the role and deserves lead one of these days.
Johnny
I also saw Maria Eberline as Elphaba in '05 on tour in Houston smile.gif She was okay... good voice, good acting, nothing OUTSTANDING... Just okay. :/
TheWesternSkies
Too much to say about these people, but so I dont clog up the boards Ill just list them

Endless praise to...

Felicia Ricci
Jennifer DiNoia
Vicki Noon
Alexa Green

and my favorite wizard

Keith A. Bearden

along with too many other u/s to list but I love you all
ForGood
In addition to my previous list:

Anthony Galde (Wizard) - Great performance. Very refreshing and fun to watch.
Teal-Shade-of-Eden
Laura Woyasz (s/b Glinda)- Absolutely brilliant. Beautiful voice/acting and great chemistry with the rest of the cast, especially Teal.

Emily Rozek (s/b Glinda)- What a glorious soprano this woman has! Just out of this world. She was brilliant, apart from her lack of chemistry with the Teal... then again, I know they'd only gone on a handful of times together.

Vicki Noon (s/b Elphaba)- I found myself very underwhelmed for the majority of the first act. I didn't think she was anything special at all-- her stage presence was lacking and she just didn't seem to be Elphaba. However, her transition in DG was flawless and that's when I really began to pay more attention to her. I also found her lack of chemistry with Kendra to be distracting. My least favorite Elphaba all around. I don't see the fuss.

Laura Dysarczyk (u/s Nessarose)- Phenomenal. One of the main reasons I was excited to see the show in SF was to see Deedee, but she was on vacation that week. Laura acted the role phenomenally and did not retain the whiny qualities I generally dislike in the performance. She may be the best Nessa I've seen so far.

Tim Talman (u/s Dr. Dillamond)- Meh. Nothing special. I would have much preferred to see him as The Wizard.
jmac42887
I just saw Mariand Torres, (current 1st tour s/b) on Tuesday Night and was completely blown away by her. She had impressive vocals, terrific actings, and whit like nothing else. I haven't been that blown away by an Elphaba since seeing Julia Murney back in 2007.
Johnny
MARIAND TORRESSSSSSS^ I freaking love that woman with a passion.
WickedinNews
Standbys/Understudies I've seen:

Laura Woyasz (s/b Glinda) Far from standby quality. Must be one of the most underated Glindas out there. I was completely floored by her performance and so glad I had the chance to witness it. She has a flawless set of vocals and portrays Glinda in just the right way. Bravo!

Merideth Kaye Clark (s/b Elphaba) I've had the pleasure of seeing her three times in the role. I was completely blown away each and every single time. Her Elphaba is a lot more sincere than her lead's (Donna). She really makes you feel much sympathy for the character. Poor girl! Makes her kick-donkey moments THAT much better. Did I mention that when she talks, it sounds identical to Idina Menzel's voice? Oh, because it does smile.gif Her singing is strong and pure and certainly is a powerhouse. I'll be ready to rally a protest if she is not made lead within several years. tongue.gif

Donna Vivino (s/b Elphaba) I saw Donna as my first Elphaba back in September 2008. Truth be told, when I'm at the theater I'm completely blown away, however when I leave I'd rather see someone else. If that makes sense? Anyways... She is perfection, however I find her Elphaba to act on impulse. You don't feel AS bad for the character as I feel you should. I want to see Elphaba picked on and not entirely standing up for herself-to me it just makes the Defying Gravity-Act 2 so much better. Donna has a pure and strong voice that blows many others out of the water.

Jared Zirilli (u/s Fiyero) I saw Jared as Fiyero four times! He is gorgeous. ekgh/l2i4hnfaL -fan girl rant over- Anyways, his voice is beautiful. His acting is okay too, I thought. I didn't seem to notice him hitting the high notes very well. Also, when he would go to do a high note, it seemed like his voice was too quiet. His Fiyero is a caring, yet self-ritious one. Good job, Jared.

Stefanie Brown (u/s Glinda, u/s Nessarose) I had the HONOR of seeing Stefanie as both Glinda and as Nessa. HARD TO COMPARE! Stefanie is just so perfect in both roles, and portrays them totally differently. SHE NEEDS LEAD

Oh, so I want to see Mariand Torres/Anne Brummel/Jackie Burns/Mandy Gonzalez/Christine Dwyer/Rachel Potter/Lesley McKinnel/Lauren Ashley Zakrin in the show too!
dustomino
Vicki Noon (u/s Elphaba) - I had the honor of seeing Vicki's first performance as Elphaba on July 19, 2008 in Chicago, and let me tell you, especially those of you who have seen her, that she was just as strong then as she is now, and I've seen her 9 times since. I remember turning to my mother several times throughout the show and telling her that I couldn't believe that she was an understudy, let alone that it was her first show. Simply perfection.

Anne Brummel (s/b Elphaba) - I had just won the lotto for the first time ever and seeing Anne's name on the understudy board was just icing on the cake. Her Elphaba is, well, beautifully tragic in every sense of the phrase. Those who have seen her can attest to the fact that she really does pull on ones heartstrings with her honest performance. I just wish I could have seen her again! Truly a phenomenal standby that I hope to see promoted in the very near future.

Erin Wilson (u/s Madame Morrible) - I knew in advance that I would be seeing Erin's Morrible, and let me tell you, she did not disappoint! She really knows how to be evil.

Peter C. Ermides (u/s Wizard) - I was excited to see Peter's take on the Wizard! I'm used to seeing older men in the role and Peter's a bit younger. He, too, did not disappoint! He was very flamboyant in the role but not overly so. To me, he added a little something extra to the sometimes boring character and I would not be disappointed if I got to see him again in the future.

Billy Harrigan Tighe (u/s Fiyero) - I already had tickets for the performance on June 28, 2010 and I found out that morning from a friend that Billy would be making his Fiyero debut. I was beyond excited! Basically, he is fabulous in the role. He looks, acts, and sings the part to a T. I really hope the rumors that he is returning after his marriage to Kristine Reese are true, because I really could see him being promoted when Chris leaves. And, well, I'd kind of LOVE that.

Lesley McKinnell (u/s Glinda) - I was having lunch with my grandma before the matinee performance on July 3, 2010 when I overheard someone sitting behind me tell their family that they would be seeing a Glinda understudy at today's performance. I legit spat out my food, turned to said person, and asked them which one. Truth be told, I had wanted to see Michelle in the role, but I'm truly glad that I got to see Lesley. She looks SO radiant in the costumes, her voice is to die for, and I found her take on the role to be very honest and intellectual, though I can see how some might think she's boring, but I, however, am not one of those people. In fact, I thought she was so great that I bought a ticket to see her that evening.
andgoodnessknows611
The first standby and/or understudy I saw was Lisa Brescia (s/b). She was so wonderful! Her Glinda was Annaleigh Ashford and they had great chemistry. At first I was a little bummed that I was not going to be seeing SJB, but that was 1-because I LOVE SJB and 2-did not appreciate standbys as much as I now do. Lisa, of course, blew me away. LOVED her so much!

Anne Brummel: HOLY COW I LOVE HER. She is actaully my most seen Elphaba. She is just....amazing. Possibly my favorite Elphaba. And actually, I saw her very first performace as standby right after she got promoted when the tour came to Richmond. She has a wonderful voice and I love the way she plays Elphaba!

Daniel Torres: I LOVE THIS MAN. He is one of my favorite Fiyeros!! Amazing voice!

Michelle London: Saw her as Nessa and as Glinda. Fantastic performer! She actually went on (as Glinda) with Anne when the tour was in Richmond, which was cool because they are like best friends in real life. They had they best chemistry and Michelle is quite hilarious in both roles!

Jennifer Dinoia: I just saw her this past June and absolutely loved her. WAI was a little weak vocally, but by DG....I was amazed. She was awesome!!! I'd love to see her again.

Laura Woyasz: Not my favorite Glinda. I saw her with Mandy and they did not really go together IMO. Vocally she is WONDERFUL!! Her acting was okay too. But it was kind of a dull performance in general.

Anthony Galde: This dude deserves some kind of award. He knows like, every possible male role. I saw him as the Wizard and LOVED him!
Elphaba_Fae
I was lucky enough to catch Lauren Ashley Zakrin when i went to see Wicked last saturday. she was an awesome GLinda. and she was so nice at the SD too. Her popular is funny, but not over the top. Her vocals didn't seem as strong as Chandra's were, but they were still awesome.
Johnny
^ I felt the same way, with her vocals. They really aren't very strong and when she goes for the high note in NOMTW its very quiet and it sounds like shes singing from her nose. But I really liked her take on Glinda.
DefyingGravity777

*revies* I love that Mariand got interviewed during her "greenification" proccess, instead of Jackie. tongue.gif (Not hating on Jackie, <3 her)

Well, now that Donna Vivino and Kate Fahrner are the standbys on Broadway I'd like to talk about how talented they are. I saw Kate as Nellie Forbush in the national tour of South Pacific and she was wonderful. When I got to the theatre and found out that Carmen Cusack would not be performing I was crushed because she was one of the main reasons why I was going to see the show. However, Kate gave an excellent performance and she was also very nice at the stage door. I'm really glad that I got to see her.

I saw Donna as Elphaba on the first national tour last May and I was very impressed with her performance. Stephanie J. Block blew me away back in October 2005 and I was worried that I would not enjoy Donna as much after that amazing performance Stephanie gave, but Donna was terrific. Her acting was very believable and her voice was very strong. She also had excellent chemistry with the rest of the cast.
DefyingGravity777
I saw Kate Fahrner as Glinda in May 2008 and her last show on June 1,2008. Excellent Glinda.

Just saw Melanie Field make her Morrible debut on the 1NT on Sunday. Very strong Morrible. Also very impressive that she is only 23yrs old. Also saw Megan Campanile in her 6th show as Glinda. Very adorable. If Katie Rose Clarke and Natalie Daradich had a baby it would be Megan. Really high voice. Vocals were a lil shaky as was her acting. Gorgeous voice though. Did a high "girl" in INTGŪ. Popular was very calm but she made it her own. Her wand twirling in Catfight needs major work. After 2 twirls she threw it down. She can be a top notch Glinda once she gets more shows under her belt.

I've heard nothing but great things about her portrayal.

I have to add in Christine Dwyer who I saw from One Short Day to the end of the show. Just one word...INFREAKINGCREDIBLE!!!!!

She was terrific when I saw her as Faith in the national tour of Brooklyn back in 2006.
