I read a while back that this year's Tony's are going to have a new category. It is going to be for replacement actors who take over for another actor in a musical or play during the last year.
Now, does anyone know if all Broadway musicals or plays are eligible, even ones that have run in the past few years? Because, if they let them go back a few years, Eden is probably eligible to be nominated in this category, along with Carol, Derrick etc.
I don't know if the eligibililty period would include Megan and Ben, because they joined May 31, 2005 and whether or not that is considered part of the 2004-05 Tony season.
But, it would still be interesting that we might see a Tony nomination for actors in Wicked this coming season.

I'm pretty sure it has to be in it's first year running to be eligble, but I could be wrong

I think I read something about this too. It is to reward new cast members that have taken over shows. Actually, I would think Sho and Megan would be eligible for the 2005 Tony's.

I don't think Sho is eligible because she took over officially in January 2005 and the last Tony awards were in July 2005.
That's why I was wondering about Megan and Ben, because of when they took over their roles. It was probably right at the eligiblility line so they might be eligible.
But that is the major point I am wondering. Just musicals and plays that opened in the last year or all running plays and musicals. Just doesn't seem fair for an actor to take over in a long running play and not be eligible for any award.
Glad they added this category.

yea i read about this too, i would think that they are eligable..not so much Sho and Megan because they joined earlier than the others did, but yea it would be great to have Wicked back at the Tony's...where it belongs  has anyone heard anything about the performances this year yet?

The Tony's were in June, not July. But regardless, they added this category after the last Tony event, so therefore, Shoshana was still in it for 6 consecutive months after it was added, which is a requirement, as was Megan and Ben... couldn't they all be nominated?

Well what other replacements could possibly enter? I know for a fact anyone who played Edna in harispray last year is likely to be nominated. carole shelley and michelle should be nominated because they were still there even though they are originals, who cares! SHELLEY AND FEDERER RULE!

I don't think Eden is eligible because they said that the actor cannot be part of the original cast (which Eden was, as a standby). Therefore, Derrick would also not be eligible.
For Shoshana, I think they were debating whether or not she could be because the question also came up for Harvey Fierstein for Fiddler on the Roof.
Megan and Ben are definitley eligible however. In the end, the show can only submit 2 names (from what I remember).

Well, if Sho does end up being eligible, what a choice the producers have to make.
Picking two of the three from Megan, Sho and Ben.
I'd guess it would end up being Megan and Sho bacause, I just get the feeling, Ben would volunteer to step aside for the ladies.
