QUOTE
Megan Hilty will always be up there at the top for me. She was my first Glinda and I think when she is paired with the right person (Shoshana or Eden, imo) she shines. I agree she got a little tired at the end of her LA run, and even in her tour run, but when I saw her on Broadway she was just great. I absolutely loved the whole BALLGOWWWN thing she used to do on Broadway and she has great comedic timing in the role.
Acting-wise, Katie Clarke pwns. She brought a really great depth to the character that I never saw Kendra or Megan do (or any other Glinda really for that matter). Plus, Katie's Popular is one of the absolute funniest I've seen. It's so unique and she completely makes it her own and doesn't rely on copying other peoples ideas throughout the song.
Vocally, Kendra wow'd me with her belt, especially in Thank Goodness. I really liked her overall portrayal of the role and she had GREAT chemistry with Julie when I saw her. She has a great stage presence and definitely brings her own flair to the role. Plus, some of the small and subtle ad-libs she always throws in to various scenes are just phenomenal and really sets her Glinda apart from others.
Laura was really great and considering it was her first Broadway performance ever, she was so much better than I expected her to be. It was really nice to see her bring a fresh new take to the character which, when seeing a standby, a unique interpretation is a breath of fresh air. Her "Popular" was extremely fun and she brought her own new quirks to the song that I really liked. Overall, she had a good transition from Act 1 to Act 2. Not as prominent as it could have been but it was definitely there. Plus, her chemistry with Nicole was really great considering it was their first time performing together!
Alli, Alli, Alli... there's so much to say. She basically IS the character. From her vocals to her acting choices to her unique delivery - she really brings something that I had never seen. Her "Popular" was by far the greatest I've seen live. I absolutely loved her vocals and her chemistry with everyone around her is amazing. Wonderful.

Updating mine...
1. Kendra Kassebaum - I did have her tied with Dianne, but I'm moving her to first on her own because she really did captivate me and make me care about Glinda in a way no other actress quite has. Great voice, and absolutely loved her acting.
2. Dianne Pilkington - My first Glinda, and she never disappointed. Plus she's got the best "Thank Goodness" ending I've seen.
3. Katie Rose Clarke - She stole the show when I saw her, absolutely hilarious, and she also has a really great transformation between the two acts. She's practically tied with Dianne, Dianne's main edge being that she was my first and I saw her so many times.
4. Megan Hilty - Great voice, and really funny, but a little bit too OTT at times.
5. Emily Rozek - Possibly the best vocally I've seen, but I felt her Glinda was a little too subdued.
6. Erin Mackey - I really enjoyed her during the first act, but can't remember too much about her second act. She was good, but didn't make a big impression.
7. Sarah Earnshaw - I felt like she was trying to imitate Dianne, and it just didn't work for me.

Ah I've only seen Helene Yorke and Alli Mauzey, but I can't choose one over the other.
Alli definitely has the better voice. But I just found Helene more entertaining and funny. I enjoyed Helene's Popular more, but that, by no means, means that Alli wasn't entertaining or funny. I also think the chemistry between the two girls influenced my decision. Marcie and Helene had the best chemistry ever, therefore I enjoyed Helene's Glinda more.

Marrisa was quite good. beautiful vocie but sometimes her voice just gave out, unfortunatley. I really enjoyed her acting choices in some scenes. She had good, but not great stage presence. She had great chemistry with everyone too. the only Problem was that her act 1 Glinda wasn't that much diffrent then her act 2 Glinda. Strangley I thought her first act Glinda was much better then her second act, but the audience around me seemed to disagree. Everyone was saying that you could tell she was the understudy and the lead they saw was much better at intermission, but after act 2 everyone was saying that they adored Glinda in this act while I was exiting. I do wish she could have gone on more. that was preety much about it

Stage Presence;

2 - Alli Mauzey
3 - Sarah Earnshaw
4 - Helen Dallimore
Overall;
1 - Sarah Earnshaw
2 - Alli Mauzey
3 - Dianne Pilkington
4 - Helen Dallimore
My taste for Helen & Dianne has changed lately, because I'm beginning to enjoy Dianne's performance in some parts. Alli was just so funny & incredible in every part, and Sarah just is Glinda to me. But I can remember Helen being really bland as Glinda for the most part & that's what I enjoyed in the role for the beginning, but now I'm enjoying crazier Glinda's. So even though I enjoyed Helen at the time, looking back on it, if I was to see her now, I wouldn't enjoy her as much.

I wonder if we could do this with Glindas/Elphabas we've seen live but not in Wicked? Because I've seen plenty of them in other shows.
ForGood
Aug 30 2009, 03:51 AM
Eh, I don't think that would really be fair or accurate. For example I don't know where I would have ranked Stephanie and Megan even though I saw them in 9 to 5. Someone could be great in one role and miscast in another.
Tayzer
Aug 30 2009, 03:52 AM
Well, we do that in the performer analysis threads and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.
ForGood
Aug 30 2009, 03:58 AM
I just think it would be inaccurate and unfair. How can you know from seeing someone in another role how you'd rank them as Elphaba/Glinda? You can't. It doesn't make any sense.

Aren't stage presence and charisma the same thing?

Hmm, I've always felt like stage presence was their actual presence onstage - "star power" - and charisma was more their rapport with the audience. A dancer might have stage presence but charisma mightn't necessarily be evident, and a comedian might have charisma but stage presence mightn't be part of their craft.

Aug 30 2009, 07:57 AM
To me they're the same thing--that little something extra.

I've always thought of charisma as the quirkiness off the character being portrayed & stage presence as how the actor/actress commands the stage & you immediatley look at them when they walk on stage... I think different people think of things different ways...

5.Laura Woyasz-I loved but she was a bit two spazzy in some places.

7.Marrisa Lupp- I felt bad putting Marrisa in the bottom last time, I just had my heart set on seeing Kaite. I was So so dissapointed to see she was out and really didn't feel like watching Marrisa in the begining of the first act. I very much enjoyed her the rest of the Act. I wasn't feeling well part way through act 2 so I couldn't enjoy her act 2 as much as should have. Looking back on it she was a great Glinda. and only wish I could have enjoyed her more.

8.Chandra Lee Schwartz-I saw her twice and enjoyed her a lot more the first time. She just wasn't my cup of tea. I can't wait to see her grow in to the role

Ok, after finally seeing another Glinda (after 8 whole shows of Dianne), I can finally contribute to this thread:
1. Dianne Pilkington
2. Sarah Earnshaw
I did love Sarah, and found her absolutely hilarious and her voice gorgeous, and I'd gladly see her again and again, but Dianne's just got the edge for me. She really seems to understand the character, her Act 2 is phenomenal (especially her Thank Goodness), and her little Glinda mannerisms are amazing. Plus she just seems to be constantly in character, she's endlessly entertaining to watch in the background when the focus isn't on her. She's just put so much thought and detail into her Glinda. Plus her belt is amazing.

OverallDianne Pilkington - She is just Glinda. She's always in character, she always gives full effort and she has chemistry with everyone she shares the stage with.
Chloe Taylor - For an understudy who had NEVER gone on before, she was BRILLIANT. She managed to make her make Glinda different from Sarah and Dianne but still keep her interesting. She's actually a soprano aswell which makes all the difference. I loved her.
Sarah Earnshaw - I love her Glinda. Especially when she was with Kerry. But I think her lack of stage presence lets her down most of the time. That being said, she is hilarious and SO cute and you can't help but love her!
