My friend showed me this thing of Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth singing Defying Gravity at the Tony's. Most of ya'll have probably already seen it. I liked the video. It's just i was a little disappointed because they didn't sound half as good as they do on the original cast album. Idina Menzel sounds terrific on the CD but on the video her voice sounded a bit too exaggerated and weird. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

i thought that chenoweth was great! she's better live. menzel's expressions are really over the top. i realize that it has to be because it's bway, but still. her singing sounded weird. too breathy. wasn't the dialogue different? maybe it was just shortened.

Yup, the dialogue was shortened for the OBC cd. I believe they did that because 1) it was extra dialogue and *shrug* you don't always get dialogue on soundtracks, and 2) it would be confusing to someone just randomly listening to it. Hope that makes sense.

I didn't particularly like that performance (Idina seemed off...so maybe she was sick). She's much better live (in fact, she's amazing) but I've seen better recordings of her than that.

Question, what is that song on your xanga?

Dec 15 2005, 02:06 AM
Good heavens! You are just full of questions for me this evening! What is this, interview with BT or something?
Ok, just teasing. The song is Some Things Are Meant to Be from the Little Women musical. If you actually read my xanga you'd see that somewhere...

Yay for ADD!!! I'm hopefully getting new meds in January... we'll see. We've had way too many problems with the last couple ones I've tried so I'm a little sceptical.
And I would love to do an interview. I love talking about myself to complete strangers.

Did any of you notice how fast the orchestra was playing that night? And can you imagine being on live tv with camera's in your face in front of millions of veiwers and being up for a tony? I think she did ok for being in that situation...lol :disagree:

LOL I'm not medicated, I don't have it bad enough to need medication. I just can't concentrate long enough for many things. I'm a complete stranger?! Gee, I would have only considered myself to be about 48% stranger by now... I like this emoticon: :inlove:
BTW, I have a question about Mallory's avatar:
OMG WTF HOW?!

She was performing on national t.v., she was up for Best Actress, she was sick, and the accoustics probably weren't that great, just from what I've seen of other Tony performances.
I love Kristin's intro of Hugh, in the bubble.. She started to sing those modified lyrics once at an actual performance of Wicked, but she covered it pretty well.

I have seen a few recordings of DG and she didn't do nearly as well as in the CD as she does live. I personally don't think she has the voice for NGD and DG...Sho does it SO much better.

Tehy had to shorten it cause there's a time limit.
and i think the "orch" is prerecorded, not live. Cause in some performances, they get off and the "orch" doesn't adjust the tempo...

Another thing I have noticed about Idina's performance at the Tony's is that there is a certain point toward the end (I think during the verse about no Wizard is or was) where the platform she stands on actually moves some to her right (you can see it in the shot behind Kristen).
I have to tell you. If I am standing on a little platform about twenty or so feet in the air, with my arms raised up, and the platform suddenly moves, the show's producers should consider themselves very fortunate that I finished the lyrics and didn't start some unplanned ones. Idina's voice does break during this but she keeps singing.

The back speakers weren't on.(or not working-depending on who you ask)
Idina and Kristin could barely hear the music. They were having to work basically on instinct-knowing where the music is supposed to be.
Kristin was talking about it in one interview, and Sean McCourt told us backstge...
I think the dang puppets from Avenue paid the crew members to do it....dun,dun,DUN!

I really dont like Idina live. She gasps for air all the time. I realize that she has asthma, but I still cant stand to hear her live, though she is great on recordings. Shoshana is amazing on recordings and live...you cant lose with her!

I read somewhere (probably on a message board so it might not be true) that she smokes, which would be a seriously silly thing to do (if it's true)... I mean, it's true for other performers--Adam Pascal, for one--so it might be for her.
